Where to have injector work done?

Any suggestions on where to send diesel injectors for assesment?

I have a 4JH3-HTE Yanmar diesel (100hp turbo) in my sailboat. With 2,500 hours on it I have mildly excessive smoke, so I'd like to have the injectors checked. Is it a simple matter that any diesel shop should be able to do it or should I send them off to be checked?

Any good Diesel shop can do they work, and I believe any decent sized town will have a shop nearby. I wouldn't send them out myself.

At 2500 hours, would it make more sense just to replace them, rather than test and refurbish them (if not too worn)? After all, you still might end up having to replace them.

I'm certain that there is a good shop there, or at worst Savannah.
If you got new ones, I'd have the old ones cleaned and tested and kept as spares, I wouldn't dispose of the old ones.
I'm in the same position actually, with a 4-JHBE, anyone have a good place to buy Yanmar injectors?

I believe that all genuine yanmar parts come thru there or mack boring in nj. They would be able to recommend a local mechanic or parts dist. to you.

This time last year I had my 4JH-DTE injectors rebuilt at a cost of right at $100 each. A rebuild uses the old body but you get new nozzles. The bodies were more expensive than the nozzles. This was at a Titusville Yanmar dealer in Melborne, FL.

Any Yanmar dealer will sell you parts if you want to DIY.

Check with your local NAPA. They will likely have a place where they send work for rebuild. Had my injector pump done in Marathon. 6 day turnaround.

As i mentioned in my other post, the body costs as much as the nozzles. The body holds the nozzles that actually do the work and provides a way to connect the high pressure fuel lines and the overflow back to the tanks.

New nozzles in my old bodies is as good as new at half the cost.

yes any good diesel shop should repair them, I had mine done fast turnaround, good price....

Have same engine and I just replaced with new injectors from yanmar about $225 each. Watch out if you take them out yourself or use someone that doesn't know the engine not to damage, the old ones if you are having them cleaned and tested, the little overflow small tubes welded on the top of the body of the injector. The way I did it I disconnected the small rubber hose pieces that is connected in a series to all the injectors, firstly and then took the injectors out. Use your Iphone to take pictures so you know how to put them back in. While you are at it wash with Yanmar Turbo Wash your Turbo. 1 oz of Turbowash undiluted while the engine is at 75% rpm in the air intake slowly followed by 1 oz of H2O. Do it up to 4 times depending on the smoke situation you have. That trick solved my problem and not so much the new injectors.

Doing a quick part search, new injectors are around $240 US for new. If you can get cleaned, tested and rebuilt for $100 each, from a reliable shop, I would go that direction. I don't know if any rebuilds come with a warranty though, so be sure of your contractor.

I've used a diesel injector specialist shop that does trucks etc. They suggested to me that my Yanmar injectors should never need replacing as the amount of work they do compared with long haul truck injectors is infinitesimal. Different beasts but similar principal apart from newer common rail type. A diesel shop has measuring equipment to test the opening pressure and they know what the spray pattern should look like.
The opening pressure affects the timing of the engine. Too low a pressure and the ignition is advanced and too high it's retarded much like the spark in a car engine.
This greatly affects the performance of the engine.


New Yanmar injectors seemed highly expensive here and I promptly forgot that idea along with their price.


I suppose it might be possible to DIY by looking at the timing marks on the flywheel but I wouldn't bother as you need to take the starter off, and probably a few more bits so you can see the marks.


If you do DIY beware of injecting yourself with diesel. The stream from an injector can penetrate your skin. Then the trip you have might be to hospital.
