What Kind of Smoke is My Engine Smoke ?!

hi i have just lagged a piece of the old exhaust\t with fake asbestos style wide woven tape, probably glass fibre. i then put plaster of paris bandage.
i have now run the engine, lots of 'exhaust' in the cabin, seemed to be a whitish grey 'smoke' almost like steam rising from the lagging! obviously one tiny sniff and i got out! at astern exhaust appears very pale grey, obviously quite steamy from mixing with the exhaust cooling water.
nb the water is added on the very far side of an inverted U in the long length of the exhaust pipe.
any ideas on how to 'seal' it?

thnx

Re: What Kind of Smoke is My Engine Smoke ?!

I almost killed a crew with exhaust gases on a delivery. The wind died as I came on the mid watch ,so I fired up the diesel and and the crew went below to get some sleep. Four hours later I went below to wake her and the cabin was full of smoke. She was groggy and came on deck sick as hell and had headaches for days. We both stayed in the cockpit for the next 12 hours into port. Exhaust leaks are very serious and can kill or do brain damage. FIX IT RIGHT.______Grant.

"i then put plaster of paris bandage." "seemed to be a whitish grey 'smoke' almost like steam rising from the lagging!"

I suspect the plaster of paris is the problem. I've never heard of using plaster of paris in this application. My customers usually just wrap the pipe and wire the lagging in place.

My Dad told me that in the olden days they used Waterglass (sodium silicate) as a glue to attach the asbestos tape.

He also said you could preserve eggs in it, but that's another story.

Lagging is for insulating hot exhaust pipes(usually for dry exhaust systems) it is not for repairs and is dangerous to use it as a fix. Deepfrz has it right.____Grant.
