Westerbeke w46

Hi, Does anyone know what engine a 1985 Westerbeke W46 is based on ? Is it a Perkins 4-108? I am looking for tech info to rebuild the diesel injectors. Many thanks .

The W46 is based on a Mitsubishi 127 cu in engine.
Marine Gear in Ft Lauderdale, and www.torresen .com are good sources.
My W46 is 30yrs old, 2100 hrs and runs sweetly.

Many Thanks, Blue Stocking. My Westerbeke is in my O'Day 40, 1750 hrs, but is hard starting although the preheats seem fine. I am assuming the injectors are dripping so intend having them rebuilt. The starter turns the engine over smartly but there is a lot of white smoke and no action!

Re: Westerbeke w46

Check the glow plug contact areas. The bridging bar is aluminum, connected to the glow plug heads with the little knurled thumb wheels, these contact areas need to be clean. Also check the heating solenoid and its connection back to the engine breakers. I take it that your start/heater buttons are in series and are both functioning.
Strangely enough, W/beke suggest a bit of throttle when starting from cold. My engine will then smoke a bit. No throttle gives me a clean quick start.

Re: Westerbeke w46

Holmek,
Make sure that when you pull the injectors, get the "corrugated atomizer washers" as the british call them. I have the W60 and they require them. Most Westerbekes do use them. They sit at the bottom of the injector and when you tighten the injectors down they press on this aluminum washer. The washer is designed to wick away some of the heat to keep the injector from seizing up. Mine use the same washer as the old chevy 6.2 liter diesel. Also, my rebuild manual only had a vague picture of the item and no instructions on installation. Upon discussion with Joe Joyce at Westerbeke in Michigan(he is the man to know for all things westerbeke)he says that they are important and are a must.
Hope this helps.

My boat (1989) has a Westerbeke 46 and the diesel mechanic tells me it is based on a Kubota block. I haven't the foggiest idea of how to tell the difference or if he even knows what he's talking about. He does know how to write a darn good (for him) bill.

Has he managed to install any Kubota parts on your motor. Now that would make him a GREAT mechanic, eh!

BTW, its a Mitsubitchi.

Re: Westerbeke w46

Thanks guys for all the feedback. The engine has been comfirmed as a Mitsubishi. The corrugated washers are indeed heat shields, and my injectors were very sad,; squirting instead of atomising. Thank you to all thoise who replied.

Westerbeke has marinized engines from a number of sources over the years.

I doubt that they'll tell you what you wish to know, but you might ask them.

Westerbeke Corporation
Myles Standish Industrial Park
150 John Hancock Road
Taunton, Massachusetts 02780
U.S.A.
Tel: (508) 823-7677
Fax: (508) 884-9688

The W46 was offered from April, 1985 through October, 1990. Perhaps the following literature may help you/someone deduce the base model.

This is the same engine that I have just torn down (see http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...sis-64952.html ).
I was glad to hear about the corrugated aluminum washers under the injectors. I might have missed that. Can you tell me what you had to pay for the injector job?

Re: Westerbeke w46

1985 W 46 is based on a Mitsubishi 4DQ5. Look at the rear of the block on the right side. I just had my injectors rebuilt but the engine just died. (threw a rod through the block). Are you interested in my injectors? If so call me @ (978 388-6312) or (508) 523-6185. I also have the high pressure fuel pump, starter, cylinder head (with new valve springs and seals and valve job.) plus camshaft and crankshaft, flywheel, fuel filter assembly etc. If you need any thing let me know.
