Re: Westerbeke 52 leaking fuel from injector pump governor cover

The pump has two nuts at the adjustment slots on the mounting flange, a bolt on the oil filter mount and the splined shaft that engages the injector timing gear. The sea water pump drive tang screws onto the forward end of the injector pump shaft. The manual says to gently tap the pump shaft with a suitable nylon drift and hammer. Not sure what a nylon drift is but more than gentle tapping on the shaft/tang did not loosen the shaft. There are extractor bolt holes in the injector pump timing gear. I still need is find the size threads of the extractor holes and suspect i will need to find/ fabricate an extractor. Should I use some PB Blaster and/or heat? I am concerned about using toomuch force with the hammer. The timing gear is Westerbeke part #031027. Any other suggestions?

You can use the kind of puller used on an automotive harmonic ballancer, picked up at most auto parts stores. get the appropriate bolts and make sure they are installed evenly. before you install the puller make sure the Key way is rotated to the top of the shaft or you might loose it inside and have to remove the whole timing cover ...ie...front of engine.

after tightening the center bolt on the puller give it a slight tap with a 16 -24 oz hammer also make sure to leave the nuts/bolts on the mounting flange loosely so it doesn't fall out when freed from the timing gear.

Re: Westerbeke 52 leaking fuel from injector pump governor cover

Success! The trick was having the right tool. With a timing gear puller, te pump came right off. Now off to Everglades Diesel Injection Service for the rebuild and then I'm having a Westerbeke do the install. I never tought I would have the nerve to tackle a project like this and the comments from this forum certainly helped.

Merry Christmas to all!
