Westerbeke 50 Diesel Question

Hello all,

I have a Westerbeke 50 in my 1980 Allied Princess. I'm trying get head gasket kit, a fresh water pump, and a replacement boot for my heat exchanger. I'm experiencing sticker shock, to say the least.

Does anyone know what engine the W50 was marinized from? I've heard a Mitsubishi, but does anyone have any specifics? I'm looking for another avenue for parts outside of Westerbeke. Any help would be most appreciated.

should be a Perkins

the heat exchanger boot is going to be a Westerbeke part since they make their own castings for the cooling systems.

Yes, it should be a Perkins as that was the main engine used by Westerbeke from mid 1950s to the 1980s, after which they branched out to other engine manufacturers.

Well, Perkins is better than Mitsubishi as far as availability. Any ideas on the model number?

The W50 is a 42 hp. I've been trying to compare manufacturing dates and horsepower to figure it out. I know that Westerbeke started frankensteining their engines later, and I hope that's not the case here.

Should be either a 4-107 or 4-108. Wet vs dry cylinders liners being the big differences along with the injector pump.
Find the local Perkins industrial dealer. In The Portland,Or area I use pacific Perkins in Vancouver,WA. The heat exchanger end cap is stupid expensive and only available from the westerbeke dealer.

I think that the 4-107 and the 4-108 were sold by Westerbeke as the W40 and also the W 4-108. I wish the W50 was based on these engines as they are super reliable, but I don't think it is.

I note that some mechanics use gasket maker sealants (from a tube) to replace rocker cover gaskets.
Given that Head Gaskets have to handle higher pressures, you would expect that you cannot use gasket maker products to replace these. Or could you? Anyone know?

The pump is likely a Sherwood F 85 model. Jabsco makes an equivalent.

The Westerbeke 50 (I had one for 15 years) is based on a BMC block. BMC is out of business and you really have no option but to buy stuff from Westerbeke--if they have the parts, because they no longer are producing them of them and some things like overhaul kits would only be available if a retailer happens to have one in stock. The good news is that there are a lot of them around being taken out and folks to part them out occasionally.

Mark dont know where you are ie country but i get all my parts from www. parts4engine.com in the uk or if you try maxiforce in the states

We have a W60 in our Pearson 424. When we needed a fresh water pump, Westerbeke lists them for $880 and doesn't even have any in stock and neither did anyone else. We found out that the same basic engine was used in London taxi cabs, and bought the pump for ~220 pounds from London Taxis Exports - London Taxis for Export and Sale, Parts and Accessories. You might give them a try.
