Westerbeke 46 rear seal

Well, just a word of warning for those with westerbeke engines. Our hopes of getting a jump on the season have been dashed... its going to be 4 to 6 weeks to fill a back order of rear seals for our westerbeke 46.... we won't be getting back in the water until at least the beginning of December!

If anyone happens to have a lead on a rear seal for a 46 please PM me!

The good thing is that I have a company I like working with. He is sending the critical part number and a list of all the hard to come by part numbers so I can be prepared. Oh and I was incorrect... its 6 to 8 weeks.

I am wondering if it just cheaper to sell the westerbeke, which still runs fine except for the oil leaks, and all our spare parts, and just get a beta.

Re: Westerbeke 46 rear seal

Try this. Westerbeke did not make the blocks for their engines but purchased them from various sources, often Perkins or a Japanese truck blocks.

Took me a bit of research but was able to discover my W-58 is the same block as a Perkins 4.154 series 200 which was used in a lot of tractors and commercial equipment.

I needed a fresh water pump. Westerbeke part was over $700 for the whole thing or $230 for the impeller section. Found the impeller part for $90 from a tractor supply shop in Iowa.

This should work for any of the basic parts including crank shaft seals, if you can figure out what block you've got.

Re: Westerbeke 46 rear seal

That was our next try... I was able to find a westerbeke $800 starter motor in mitsubishi form for $123.

Our engine is used in tractors and forklifts around the world. Unfortunately, almost all of the parts come from China.

The block is a 4dq5 but I do not have a parts catalog for that engine nor a matching diagram, so searching for the part has been a non-starter. Having this document on hand would make life much easier.

OK. Sounds like you were already one jump ahead of me. Once I found the part number it was pretty easy to google for suppliers. Good luck.

Your contribution was welcome and appreciated. My wife and I are looking on the bright side. It sounds weird coming from the dirt world but we always say... there is a reason for everything. Last time my wife said " wonder who we will meet today" not 5 minutes later at almost midnight a dinghy rolled up on our side with a bottle of rum. The rest was a blur.

So, there is a reason we are supposed to be delayed. Someone we are supposed to meet, some task we are supposed to complete, whatever. There are worse places to be stuck than St. Augustine, Florida.

They guy on the hard next to us has a parrot. I had a five minute conversation with it thinking it was my wife. Apparently I don't listen so well.

Re: Westerbeke 46 rear seal

Perkins p/n 36884107 (to fit 4107 4108 4154), available from many tractor dealers in the U.S. for 1.72 per pair.

Or you can check out this (purported) fix for a 'chronic problem' for 119.00:

4 108 4 107 4 154 Perkins Rear Seal Kit | eBay

Unless you're partial to Westerbeke OEM parts.

Oops, thought I read through the thread, apparently not.

Is it a lip type seal? if you have it out can a bearing house match it by ID, OD and thickness?

Re: Westerbeke 46 rear seal

I can relate. My W-46 main seal has started leaking too, but not bad enough to warrant the tear down yet.

I can't vouch for this, but an ebay search for the 4DQ5 Mitsubishi turns this up:

New Mitsubishi 4DQ5 Engine Gasket Kit 4DQ5 Engine for Mitsubishi Forklift Truck | eBay

It's supposedly a complete gasket kit for $117 with free shipping and an estimated delivery date of October 9-15.

Best of luck,
Gary

The shop that rebuilt the injectors from my W58 (aka Perkins 4.154 series 200) told me that block is also a Mitsubishi. Seems like a lot of the Westerbeke and Perkins engines started out as Mitsubishis.

That would be a zgift? Awesome.

I did see that. The rear seal seems to be welded to the metal seal but I will double check.

Thanks!

Re: Westerbeke 46 rear seal

I think I was able to identify the actual mitsubishi part # I need: "306307-22703 Oil, Seal".

I have contacted a few tractor supply places to see if they can get the parts but I have not heard anything back yet. If anyone needs a parts catalog for a 4DQ5 engine, please let me know.
