Westerbeke 46

I've tried to fix the following issues with my W46 myself and brought my mechanic in, but still having problems.

1) RPM guage does not register or fluctuates up and down rapidly. Replaced belt and checked for proper tension, but still having a problem.

2) Engine overheat alarm is going off at about 180-190 degrees, which is within the normal operating range. Replaced wiring, but still having the same problem. Mechanic recommends I just disconnect and keep a close eye on the guage.

Any thoughts?

Is the alternator output also fluctuating? check the output voltage with a meter, on the + stud at the back of the alternator.

The overheat alarm is operated by a temperature switch. If the engine isn't overheating (confirm this with a point and shoot infrared thermometer) replace the switch.....not the wires.
