Re: Westerbeke 30 is not expelling water throught the exhaust

Which westerbeke 30? I assume W30, but they are all similar. Pretty easy to troubleshoot, start at the intake and work down. Thruhull not clogged with barnacles or plastic bag? Sea clock open? No kink in hose to pump? Pull outlet hose to pump and confirm it is ejecting water (cranking will do)? Is the oil cooler clogged with old impeller blades, etc? Pull the hose off the inlet to the heat exchanger, got water there? How about coming out of the heat exchanger? If the zinc is shot, it can clog the output. Pull the hose off the exhaust elbow and see if water is coming out there.

Re: Westerbeke 30 is not expelling water throught the exhaust

I don't know of a way to "check" an impeller. Replace with new one recently manufactured is a better test. Even then the wear plate could be worn out and so it won't pump.

There are lots of ways the water flow can be blocked. Inlet blocked by trash, weeds, fish, etc. Strainer plugged up. Hose collapsed. Water leak in exhaust can dump water into bilge (this one is really dangerous). There are probably over a dozen possibilities.

Re: Westerbeke 30 is not expelling water throught the exhaust

Be sure exhaust hose is not collapsed internaly. This happened to me
with my Atomic-4. Impeller busted and no water in the exhaust, so the
heat caused the hose to collapse and no water could flow. Towboats
were to busy so I sailed into my slip. Now that was an adventure!
Later the exhaust manifold plugged up (not from impeller debri), so trouble-shoot that also. Good luck finding the problem.

"I don't know of a way to "check" an impeller"

You look at it and see if any blades have broken off.

Re: Westerbeke 30 is not expelling water throught the exhaust

Did water run out of the water pump when you checked the impeller. If water flowed out of the pump, everything is clear to that point. When I change my impeller, the water pump is lower than the water input. I have to detach the water pump from its bracket. Sometimes fins break off of the impeller and become lodged in the hose going to the heat exchanger. My engine's block water circulation pump sprung a leak and the engine shut down because of the extreme heat. I do not remember if water was being expelled from the exhaust at this time. I just remember a bell went off and the engine shut down.

Re: Westerbeke 30 is not expelling water throught the exhaust

There is the visual check of an impeller, and to see if the rubber has torn free from the shaft you need to turn the engine when the plate is off to see if the nice looking impeller actually turns. Yes you might get wet. I have had a plastic bag plug my intake, and a small fish that really stunk when I opened the the hose to the raw water pump. Has the boat been run regularly, or has the boat been sitting???? Many possibilitys.______Grant.

My point is that even an impeller that "looks" ok may not pump. I have seen this more than once. If you are going to the trouble to remove a suspect impeller then better to just replace it with a recently made one. A 20 year old spare creates doubt too.

On my W30, the impellers are a unique design with a projecting brass sleeve that doubles as a seal surface and a dimple drive. They are uncommon, overpriced, and no less expensive generic equivalent available that I know of. I am inclined to use them for their complete lifespan. I had never considered that the rubber may part from the shaft. Another interesting way for the boat to break.

pirate Re: Westerbeke 30 is not expelling water throught the exhaust

Thanks so much for the replies!! You guys are GREAT!!!
We are having everything looks good through the heat exchanger, we are stumped... can't figure out what a part is on the very back of the motor... looks like it comes out of the gear box... we are whupped from working on it all day and forgot to take a pic, but we will tomorrow and post it so you guys can maybe glean some info out of it. We are working so hard to get this engine going... We have been restoring her for almost a year... it has been quite a labor of love... We lovingly spend most of our time working on her and plan to sail her to Greenland and then to Ireland to get married. Here are a couple shots of her and will post the pic of the part in ? tomorrow.. and as I said than you from the bottom of our hearts and bilge for your help...

Re: Westerbeke 30 is not expelling water throught the exhaust

Some impellers have a keyway or as noted a bond between the brass and the rubber that can fail.

Checking the impeller requires removing the impeller, not just the cover...

Re: Westerbeke 30 is not expelling water throught the exhaust

Penny,

If you don't know how old the impeller is then just replace it. Make sure the blades are bent in the same direction as the old impeller. Also, before inserting the new impeller put a bit of SuperLube or silicone grease around the inside of the pump where the tips of the blades rub. That will help keep the blades cooler until you get water flowing. Running a pump for more than a few seconds without water can ruin the impeller.

To test your pump you can try this trick. Close the seacock and remove the hose from the inlet side of the pump. Get a short piece of hose the same size and put it on the pump inlet. Fill the hose with water and then put the open end of the short hose in a 5 gallon bucket of water that is slightly higher than the pump (so the water will run down the hose to the pump). Start the engine and see if it pumps water out of the bucket. If it does then something may be blocking the water coming from the through hull.

The outlet of the pump should first go pretty high above the engine to a anti-siphon device. That hose might be plugged up with salt or other crud.
