Westerbeke 30 B Three - Question

Does anyone know how much coolant is needed for the engine.

Neither the Westerbeke manual nor the info sheet on the Mitsubishi L3E have it listed.

Rant: There is no way to find out exactly which coolant to use either. See separate thread on that. The manual says Zerex --- well... there are three types of Zerex coolants - DUHHHH!

The installation manual says to use a 50/50 mix. Another part in the manual tells of what mix to use depending on anticipated temp. From 10% to 70%. Yes it is true.

Are all the Westerbeke repair people holding back till I call one of the "Brothers" to pay to have it done??

Rant over.

For the moment.

Disregard the hot water circuit as that can be done separately.

AND,

Is there a "low point" on the circuit that will allow draining all the coolant? All I know about is cars and that is easy. I don't know about this engine as it seems the low point may be the water pump and I ain't goin' there to "fix" what ain't broke.

Re: Westerbeke 30-B-Three question

Here you go.
Page 67.

Its a PDF file, Has every thing you ever want to know about your engine,
Complete manual.

Full pictorial of your engine,

It drains at the bottom by removing the freshwater plug, on the heat exchanger

Well that didnt work the file was too big.

Try this one,

Google. Westerbeke 30 B three. Online manual

On line, Technical manual.

Sorry, I am not good on the Computer.

Cheers,
Brian,

Remember that the water heater and coolant bottle will take some too. It really depends on the installation as to how much coolant is used.

Hard to link to the pdf directly.

It's about halfway down this page.

westerbeke, marine generators, engines, Official Site

Operator's manual, parts manual, and technical manual all listed there.

Brian,

Thanks Mr B but that won't work.

I have all the manuals.

The pic on page 67 makes you think that the heat exchanger fresh water drain is a low point. It is not. If you look at your motor (same as mine) you will note that the exchanger is in back of the motor and actually higher than the exhaust manifold.

I will have to look to the hose that comes off the water pump as the return. That may be something I can access.

Thanks though.

Thanks for that.

I have those in print. Came with the boat.

Look like they are from the 60's don't they?

Re: Westerbeke 30-B-Three question

Aha!!!

I don't have the technical manual after all.

Page 13. 4quarts.

Wohoo!!

Thanks for pointing for me.

But it is an ancient manual as the water pump is the old one that was replaced before 2008!

Re: Westerbeke 30-B-Three question

I thought it was a long shot, as you were referencing manuals in the original post.

But you never know what might help.

Plus with the reference to the particular engine model in the post title I considered it might be a good link to have for future internet searchers looking for 30 B three info.

Glad you found new info.

They sell pre-mixed 50/50 coolant (btw, a gallon is on the list of recommended spares) and it's a lot easier than buying distilled water to dilute neat coolant.

In the past I've used Zerex G-05 in various cars as it's hybrid chemistry ensures compatibility with whatever coolant is in there (and presumably you don't know what IS in there!).

A coolant change on my boat is coming up so if anyone has strong feelings about coolant choice I'd be interested to hear, otherwise G-05 is going in there.

http://www.valvoline.com/pdf/zerex_g05.pdf

G-05 is what I ended up with. I can't find my other thread (rant) about no one knowing exactly which antifreeze to use. No one could agree - Installer, distributer, mechanic X 2 - NO ONE!!! Even the manuals are vague and contradictory.

I was told any extended life coolant, any regular coolant, Dexcool, As long as it is not Dexcool and G-05. I am pretty sure if you use Dexcool in a G-05 specified engine and visa versa you WILL have problems. Sooooo..........

So I ended up buying G-05...........even though it has silicates in it.
Here is what it says on the bottle;

"Antifreeze/coolant chemistries are different. Products that contain Organic Acid Technology (OAT) chemistry are NOT approved by Ford and DaimlerChrystler for HOAT/G-05 applications. Products using OAT chemistry may be damaging to cooling systems that specify Hybrid Organic Acid Technology (HOAT) chemistry based on OEM recommendations."

When you have that figured out let me know.

I am pretty sure that damage to the cooling systems doesn't happen fast. I think it would mean the difference in 5000 hrs or 9000hrs on a diesel. Even though I have my boat for sale I don't want to "do that" to anyone. I could just put any old green stuff in from walmart and smile right? Can't do that.

I drained my 30b tonight from the hose off the water pump but it only took 2 qts of 50/50 (pink etheloene glycol mix) so obviously not the low point I'd hoped for. A tight space on my reverse mounted engine, you need to remove a hose clamp behind the belts.

Found this link tonight claiming a bolt next to the oil filter is the coolant drain, includes a picture: Gemini 105 Projects - Jim Faughn

I will find out if he's right this weekend when I repeat the process (I figure I'm still only at 25/75 and -5, long story of yard duplicity).

Well that is interesting. Thanks.

I asked on the Gemini site too and Jim reads there a lot. He must have been off cruising while the thread sunk into the past.

I ended up taking off the hose below the alternator. That is no fun. Actually my friend did the final pull and grunt to get it off. I couldn't get it off. Careful - Putting it back wrong (looks OK) will let the pump pulley wear a hole in it.

And the drain plug seems high to me but....................

Anyway, now she has a new owner.

edit - why do you suppose this thread popped up in my profile page and not in the the usual email notifications?
