Westerbeke 12.5 BTG

The generator began emitting black soot and unburnt fuel. I rebuilt the carb and engine runs great but has started to emit soot only when shut down. Any ideas?

Presume you mean "upon", or "as" shuting down.

I am presuming we are talking Gasoline here. The black soot in a petrol engine is due to running too rich. It is possible that fuel is being sucked in while you are shutting down. Check the carb is shutting off and not choking. Some carbs have an electric shut off solinoid to stop fuel from entering. Check for one and that it turns off. Although on a small petrol genny, chances are there won't be one. The only other point is, maybe you missed something when you rebuilt the carb.

Pull the cut off solinoid out of the side of the carb. The main jet is screwed into the end of it. When it backs off it will show these symptoms.

It is gas and does not have a fuel shut off solenoid in the Weber carb. It simply goes WOT when the stop switch is engaged as the rpm start to decline. It was emitting soot continously until I rebuilt the carb. Now it runs great and does not emit unburnt fuel or soot until the stop switch is engaged, and then it is a small amount. It did not do this immediately after the rebuilt.

The previous owner had crossed referenced the OEM plugs to a plug that had the wrong heat range.
