Careful with both the purple stuff and simple green, they both can cause light corrosion and will sort of bleach paint and leave streaks, I think they are caustic.
Try spraying simple green on polished aluminum wheels and see what happens. Like a fool I used the purple stuff on my engine as I had an oil leak from an external oil filter mount and it streaked the paint, and I know better, just got stupid and forgot.
Usually you can get away with it if you throughly wet the engine first, but I should have used plain ole soap and hot water.
Two schools of though, keep it clean and dry or spray a preservative on it, both work. I use Corrosion-X on an outboard as you just can't always keep them dry. If you don't like it Corrosion -X washes off easily

Best penetrating oil is a 50 / 50 mix of acetone and automatic transmission fluid, next is PB Blaster.

That is not true, it's a mix of Toluene and trans fluid.

from what I can remember, it has fish oil in it. And you can cook with it too (but tastes like hell)

As far as cleaning goes, dish washing liquid and cold water wash powder designed for use in washing machines are not corrosive and good for boat parts etc.

Rustoleum paint is what you guys are thinking of with respect to fish oil.

Once again my sense of humor sucks. There is this stuff called Mouse Milk. It's used in the turbo charger and waste gate service world. It's about the only stuff that does anything. It does smell like Toluene.

I'm not a fan of WD40 for any use.

I had 4 padlocks that were sticky. I sprayed 2 with WD40, and 2 with CRC silicon spray. The locks freed up immediately with both liquids, but the 2 locks that were sprayed with WD40 eventually rusted up very badly only in the areas where they were sprayed.

I'm not disputing the claims that WD40 displaces water when it's first sprayed on, but it sure looked like it attracted a combination of dust and moisture after it evaporated and really rusted those 2 locks up badly.

It reminds me of Armor All, which is supposed to be a UV protectant, but in reality if you use it and don't reapply it frequently, you'll see your dash or vinyl dry out and crack worse than if you never used it.
