Water Pump Rebuild

I have a Yanmar with an rubber impeller pump. In my case the pump pumps a water/antifreeze mix through a keel cooler. My concern is when to consider doing a complete rebuild of the pump with bearings, seals etc? I don't know the exact hours on the engine but probably around 3000. I know that there might be leaks etc before complete failure but I would like to avoid that. I thought perhaps I might carry a spare pump but at $500+ That's not an option. My cruising is Southeast Alaska so not crossing oceans but there is possibility of being quite remote.

Re: Water Pump Rebuild

With the belt off the pump is there play in the pulley?

Luckily bearing and seals are fairly cheap and avaiable either on line or at a bearing supply house.

If it has 3000 hours on it, I would expect the pump to have been rebuilt or replaced once before. Mine is getting real close to 2000 hours. I of course have a new shaft, bearings and seals all ready to go.

Look at Depco pumps on line, they have a online catalog for yanmar. A bit pricey but they do ship retail too. http://www.depcopump.com/

I know the bearings and seals are standard size itmes available on amazon and ebay, seals are tc13x28x7 and roughly $7 on amazon. Bearings on ebay are S6201 2RS, SS6201 RS STAINLESS STEEL SEALED BEARING 12x32x10(2 for $15)

This for a yanmar 3gm30 (2gm or 3 gm) I think the 3HM uses the exact same pump.
