VP MD2040D Throttle Spring

Hi all,

I needed to take the timing cover off my Volvo Penta MD2040D and am having trouble figuring out where one of the springs attaches to.

The attached picture is the interior of the timing case cover. The spring can attach to one of three hole. I have it attached to the top hole where it is stretched out the least.

Not sure if it belongs in this hole or the bottom hole where it is stretched out a lot more.

Anyone familiar with this engine who can help me out?

Re: VP MD2040D Throttle Spring

Is it explained on the Workshop Manual?

Maybe Page 55?

Re: VP MD2040D Throttle Spring

The MD series has a really Rube Goldberg set up for this control linkage. The Workshop Manual is not particularly useful for detail like this. The parts manaul diagrams are generally more useful for details, but IIRC even the parts diagrams are not very useful in this case.

Ive removed and reinstalled these a few times, but dont have any good images handy. Will see if I can find anything.

The link below is to the parts diagram. Not great specifics for reassembly, but gives some hints as to attachment points of springs.

That looks like you got it right in your photo and matches belizesailors diagram in the link. The next tricky part is getting the oil pump static plate to line up with the roll pin in the timing cover.

Re: VP MD2040D Throttle Spring

Thanks for all the replies so far. I think the parts diagram is for a slightly different version of governor mechanism so doesn't help much on figuring out how to reattach the spring.

I think I'll try it where it is in the photo and hope it works.

Any advice on how to keep the spring in place when I reinstall the timing cover plate? I was thinking a bit of silicone on both ends to hold it in place but there's probably a better way.

Re: VP MD2040D Throttle Spring

The spring in your photo is the "start spring". It pulls the governor linkage into the "run" position after being stopped if the throttle isn't advanced somewhat by the operator. In some of the other models in the 2020,2030,2040 series there is a small piece of firm foam rubber that is pressed into the recess in the timing case and that holds that end of the spring in position during assembly.

When installing the case you need to align the hole in the oil pump end plate with the roll pin in the timing case recess ( as already mentioned) and then hold the stop lever in the "stop" position with your thumb while positioning and installing the cover. This will tension the spring and keep it from falling off the linkage.

According to the parts book you have the correct hole position for the forward end of the spring. The additional holes are used for another spring on some of the other engine models.

Re: VP MD2040D Throttle Spring

I left the spring where I had it in the picture and everything looks like it's working now. That little spring seems like a weak point in the engine design.

Thanks to everyone who helped.
