Re: VP 2003t coolant pump

have any of you found a source for parts for this pump other than volvo? their prices are shocking! is there a workaround method using alternate parts? my problem seems to be the ceramic spring loaded seal is cracked slightly and leaking. anyone know the original manufacturer (other than volvo)?

Re: VP 2003t

Hi,
Not at the moment but I intend to get my old one rebuilt either as a spare or to sell to recoup some of my outlay.
I will keep you informed of progress and perhaps you could do the same?

Good luck

Re: VP 2003t

A couple of comments.

I had the same issue on a near new Yanmar 3ym30, the price quoted for a replacement water pump here in Oz was over $800 a few years ago, so the Volvo parts prices are not much more exorbitant than Yanmar.
I ended up with a new pump from the US, but it took so long a local auto shop replaced the seals in the old one.
So I have a spare Yanmar pump if anyone needs one.

Current boat has a 1500 hr non turbo Volvo 2003. It’s raw water cooled, I wonder if it would be easier to convert the turbo one to RWC rather than stuffing around with VP parts issues, the engines are close to the end of their life/parts cycle anyway.

I have a nice low hours VP 2030 and saildrive I bought from a friend in my garage, if my 2003 plays up it is going to be replaced, not repaired. The VP 2030 is a Perkins engine, so you are not hostage to VP.

Re: VP 2003t

Hi Olaf,

I think it’s not a bad idea to keep a lookout for a spare 2030 engine that has reasonably low hours although I was under the impression that the 2030 was one of the few VP made ??

The 200X series were the last true Volvo engines before they switched to the Perkins / ISM (Japanese) made blocks.

The 2030 isn't without its foibles. The heat exchanger seals at each end take a little setting up if removed and the thermostat is behind one of the manifolds on some models. Whose bright idea was that However, if our 2003 goes bang we will be making a call to Dorset Marine Engines mentioned earlier.
