I have a old volvo that did that, When I replaced the shift seletor lever seal on the tranny I removed some shims and it no longer clunks into gear. If I remember right you are suppposed to install with no shims and add shims untill you can move it. Mine had about 14 shims in it and I only needed 2. , You should never shift to reverse quickly at any rpm over idle, its not the trans thats going to take the brunt, its the prop, prop shaft and engine mounts.
