Volvo rebuild
The Volvo 50hp motor in the yacht I’m looking at is suspect. Anybody have any ideas of the cost to pull out and rebuild? Or replace? Perhaps add on anything else worth rebuilding whilst it is out! I’m in Australia.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Volvo rebuild
We are not mind readers. Your question is impossible to answer. It is kind of like asking "how long is a piece of string?"
How old is the engine?
What model?
What makes it "suspect"?
What is the access like to remove it?
Where are you?
What kind of boat?
What do you want to use the boat for?
Would you do any of the work yourself?
A very, very, round number for a 50HP repower is US$20K-25K, but that is a wild ass guess... A professional rebuild might be half that, or maybe not possible, if parts are not available for an older engine.

Re: Volvo rebuild
Around $20,000 is close enough. Thanks for the response.

Re: Volvo rebuild
Think you'd be better off buying a new Beta than rebuilding a volvo if it needs a major rebuild as volvos parts prices are horrendous.

Re: Volvo rebuild
Thanks Compass790. Any idea what a new Beta 50hp is roughly worth?

Re: Volvo rebuild
If its an MD22, the complete overhaul kit is about £400 and it includes pistons and bearings.... another £100 for a set of valves ...at " Parts4engines" in UK. Is the boat aluminium by any chance?

Re: Volvo rebuild
Thanks Pete, that’s helpful. It’s an MD 22L and the boat is fibreglass with the motor easy to get to. I’ll look up the site.

No but lucky SkipperPete posted as I'd be rebuilding at that price. Heard lots of horror stories of volvo parts prices here in NZ but that sounds ok.
Sorry I put you crook & thanks to skipperpete for the good oil.
I'd be guessing a Beta would be close to 20k Au but you can check with agent

Re: Volvo rebuild
Being a GRP hull makes the potential engine replacement a lot easier, VP MD22 is an insulated earth engine which is needed for alloy hulls. You can put a normal "earth to engine block" engine in a GRP boat.
I'm not disagreeing with Compass790, the decision to rebuild depends on how good or bad the condition of the MD22 actually is and what the labour and yard costs are in your location. Do a cost comparison after a bit of research and weigh up the options.

Re: Volvo rebuild
I had a client that had their 40hp? Volvo rebuilt here in Oz this year for $13,000. The job looked a bit budget since the motor was not even given a coat of new paint and on the day of the survey the bilge was full of coolant!
I am seeing a fair few new Vetus Diesel engines being installed here on the east coast of Oz.
Cheers

Volvo rebuild
I have heard so much variability on the results of rebuilds. Some experts caution against rebuilds of small diesels for that reason
I repowered with a Beta 50 which in 2017 was around 15K for engine; labor for my boat was another 5K.
Much better choice than rebuilding a 30 year old engine and parts IMHO if you plan to keep and use boat.
And parts availability is easy and cheap not that I will need that for a while with only 225 hours on engine so far....

Re: Volvo rebuild
I have a 1976 Volve-Penta MD3B that was slow starting, smoking and showed poor compression. It is now stripped apart at an engine machine shop in Chatham On. Canada. Any thoughts on where I can source a rebuild kit. Thanks Skip

Good points here. I was assuming ( never assume! ) volvo rebuild parts alone would be in the region of $6000 not $1000 depending on what is wrong. So I had to disagree with my first post.
If you can do most of the work yourself I would always go for rebuild but if you have to pay someone it depends on if they are any good. Exchange rebuilds can be a good option IF, again, the rebuilder knows his stuff.
Let us know what you decide to do & why please.
