Volvo Penta MD7B Oil Consumption and Assorted Maintenance

We have been running a Volvo Penta MD7B built in about 1981 for the last year. It runs very sweetly and starts first time everytime. The only concern we have is that it drinks about 1 litre of fuel for every 10 litres of diesel. It does smoke a bit when it starts but it certainly isnt a smoke stack. She works very well but.......!

Any ideas very gratefully received!

I also have some very "beginner" questions.......

I have just changed

a) the primary fuel filter
b) secondary fuel filter
c) the oil filter
d) the impeller
e) engine oil
f) alternator drive belt

In rough terms after how many hours of engine usage should we change them again?

We cruise at about 2,600 to 2,700 revs for about 80% of the time but occasionaly run the engine at about 1,000 revs to 1,500 revs to top up the batteries.

Many thanks
Ken

Ken
I had a volvo md6b. You did not say how many hours are on it. Probably rings are worn. You have all the symptoms. Check compression.

Number of Engine Hours

Sorry for the omission The engine hours meter shows 1780 hours which would be about 60 hours a year since the boat was built which I think sounds very low. I know the engine had a major rebuild in 2005 but it sounds like a lot of hours for five years!

All I ever got out of mine before major work was 800 hours. Rebuilt twice once by me (not so good a job) and once by excellent mechanic. Compression test should confirm rings. I once had an oil leak from pressure sender unit. Blew out oil fast. If you have oil in bilge look for leak if not it is rings or valves.
