Volvo Penta MD31

I'm having some trouble finding any information on this engine anywhere. I'm looking at a boat that is equipped with a 1992 Volvo Penta MD31. I know it's a 62HP engine, but nothing beyond that. Is this a reliable engine and what is the availability of spare parts? Seeing as its a 21 year old engine, I'm somewhat nervous about it. The boat its in is in need of a refit and I'm trying to see if I should budget to overhaul/replace the engine as well.

Hi Kevin,
This may be a bit late but I have a 43 foot sailboat with the md31a VP installed. Over the last three years it's been a great engine, always starts instantly and runs very smoothly and on temp for long durations. I've done some maintainence jobs ( cleaning heat exchanger, upgrading raw water intake) but mainly good regular servicing. It has 5500 hrs on it, I think if you get one that's been looked after then you're on the right track.

Thanks Ben. Ended up not buying that boat. The owner had a change of heart and pulled it off the market. Thanks anyway though!
