Volvo Penta md2040D - oil change / oil type?

Hi all,

I changed oil yesterday. We are about to bring boat up on the hard for refit.

I rang a volvo penta experienced mechanic. I asked about oils other than premium price volvo penta oil. He said Castrol RX Super, which is widely used and well regarded here in Oz. Appears to meet all the oil spec requirements contained in the engine user manual, for engine and reverse gear. Anyone else using this? Any thoughts?

For reverse gear, manual just says fill to "correct level". It was hard to tell where that is before removing oil. Spec's say capacity is 0.56 litres. I put about that amount in, but still cant really see where oil level is - yes i screwed in dip stick properly. There's a notch on the dip stick, i assume level should be above that. Or do people just put in the specified capacity? Can you overfill with the reverse gear?

cheers

I reckon Castrol RX Super might be similar to Castrol GTX Diesel in the US (??).

Oil specs are what matters, who makes the oil is less important. Volvo don't make oil but they do specify the specs needed. If a reputable company (which Control is) specs their oil as suitable then you are good to go. As for the gearbox, fill to the line on the dipstick, do not trust the amount specified. In a mechanical gearbox there won't be any great downside to slightly overfilling.

The ATF on the gearbox oil dipstick can be difficult to see.
A bright torch helps, but another trick is to use some paper towel gradually slide it down the removed dipstick when it hits the ATF level the paper towel sucks it up and is obvious the where the level is.

Generally the mark on the dipstick is the top (maximum) level. The bottom of the dipstick is the lowest level.
Most need to measured with the dipstick resting on the gearbox housing not screwed in, but this is not universal.
Get it right, too much fluid is not ideal.

What make of gearbox is it?. There will be manual online from the gearbox manufacturer. ZF is one of the common brands.

Hi Noelex77, thanks for your words of advice. I think the gearbox is just the V'Penta MS15A. Cheers
