Volvo Penta MD2003 Starter

Hi Guys,
My MD2003 starter solenoid is busted, I have tried Volvo for a replacement but the one I have is not identified on their system, I guess it has been replaced in the past.
Volvo want over £600 for a new starter which is probably a re-badged Bosch. Does anyone know of an alternative part to replace this starter.
Thanks
David

Why are you so sure it's the solenoid? I have a Volvo 2003 and have been through a ton of starting problems and may be able to help.

I have a spare solenoid and will run over to the boat today and see what markings are on it.

I also have an isolation solenoid, common on sail drive systems. It is
Volvo Penta Relay Part No. 872242 but is a Valeo with markings, CEY 113 12V 106

All the starter solenoid does is switch the higher amp current to the starter. What happens if you jump from the battery positive to the starter post? If the starter doesn't go, then the solenoid is not your problem.

I have one solenoid that sticks when it is warm (after the engine has been running) making a restart at the fuel dock tough. I tap it with the handle of a screw driver and then it behaves.

Gee aren't boats fun?

George

Hi George,
For sure it's the starter solenoid, I have it in my workshop at home. Testing with a battery has no effect! When it was on the boat I could short the contacts to get it started.

Unfortunately the boat is in Croatia and the starter is still on it (I am in the UK), next time I will be down there will be in April, can't get any info off the starter till then.

If you could give me details off your starter I can order one of them, I guess it should fit.

Thanks

David

I believe this is a standard starter, Bosch I think, available in the automotive aftermarket for US$100

My spare starter is:
Bosch SR37X
095 58412

The solenoid mounted on the spare starter has the following stamped on the side:
Germany
0331
303074
12V

The spare solenoid has no marks on the side but on the face that mates to the starter housing it is stamped:
5012 12V

Maybe with some of these numbers and a little time with an Internet search engine, you can figure out what to buy.

I hope this helps.

George

The solenoid is busted, see other threads
Don't know the model, the plate is hidden from view, there is a mark on the faceplate of the solenoid - 2866
Don't know the manufacturer either but I think it might be Bosch
I have uploaded a couple of photo's.
Thanks for your help
