Yes hi. Just having a look around the motor in the boat I recently bought.
Seems it has an electric water pump fitted, adapted from a bilge pump.
Is this a common practice,and would this system be okay?

Could really be doing with opinions on this,,cheers Tony,just learning.

Are you talking water pump">raw water pump or fresh water side?

Plumbing in an electric pump is a great get home in an emergancy fix. It is not something you want to depend on for long term service. Even in an emergancy situation you might forget to turn it off and fill your exhaust system(and then the engine) with water, or forget to turn it on, and overheat the engine. The last owner probobly got sticker shock when he priced an original pump and went cheep, or could not locate one. On the odd chance that it is the fresh water side, it will last even less time since bilge pumps are not designed to pump 200 degree water. Fix it right or you will have an unreliable (unsafe) boat. Be sitting down when you start pricing original pumps. Good Luck,_____Grant.

Likely the previous owner priced Volvo parts and rigged a bandaid. Here is a thread on this forum who is selling 2003 parts. Hope this helps.

I had a feeling this was not the way to go. who ever fitted this up did make an effort.
Motor won't turn over until pump is turned on,and when motor is stopped alarm sounds untill turned off .
Thanks for your advice,and will fit a new one. Sounds as though they are quite pricy.cheers

thanks for that, had a look at those bits for sale,I think I should go new,,feel a little safer that way ,though lighter in the pocket I suppose.

The raw water pumps are not too expensive. You can find the manufacturer cross ref'd online. You do not need to go to Volvo. Try Depco for a cross ref.
edit: the pump is a Johnson 10-24707-01. Don't think the last two digits are important.
