Volvo or Yanmar

I'm trying to deciede between the Volvo d2-75 turbo charged (12,200.00)or the Yanmar 4jh 75hp. ($11,000.00) I have a volvo now. Comparing prices on starters, headgaskets ect - the prices seem the same. Salesman said the Volvo is really a perkins? Cruising around Puerto Rico
any comments?

Both of my boats with diesels have had smaller engines (Yanmar 3HM35F and Volvo MD 2020) but if I needed to replace with another ICE, I would choose Yanmar.

I used d2-55 and it was very good. It was Perkins block I believe and I know the new small engines are Perkins block too, so probably - yes.

I am happy with my Yanmar 28 hp engines. They each have 4500 hours on them, and they are going strong after more than fifteen years.

Have you tried to get service for Volvo.If I had a choice I would go with Yanmar.

We have had a couple of threads on here lately where the owners were not very satisfied at all with Yanmar engines or service. Look them up.

People seem to be happy with both. The real question is parts availability and costs in your part of the world. I've had a good experiance with Yanmar and since my engines are older, have some familiararity with parts costs on them. Not bad at all... but that's where I live, not where you are.

are they from different vendors?

which do you work with better? which is closer? who do you trust more?

both engines will provide excellent service if cared for for many years.

The Beneteau 423 owners group is Beneteau423@yahoogroups--the boats came with both Volvo's and Yanmars, and there are a number of threads related to Volvo problems. You are the first person I've heard of who found spares are the same price--typical Volvo spares are very costly.

i would choose yanmar but the price of change over could be extremely high--may need to re arrange the motor mounts or stringers .....

Yes we checked the prices for spare parts - an oil pump and head gasket and they were comparable. Using marinepartsexpress.com for the volvo parts. The parts were much much more for our current volvo MD21A which I installed 32 years ago ($700 for a water pump)-it runs great now but I've started having to make parts for it - as parts are just not available. We're leaning towards the Volvo as we had good luck with the old one (!) it should just bolt right up with no changes to engine mount positions and the salesman was very honest - he suggested we look at the yanmar as availability of parts once we leave Puerto Rico is better than Vovo and because he knew his product so well, he was even able to tell us which Yanmar our Borg Warner trans would bolt right up too.
Hope I still feel this way in about 2 weeks when we get delivery of the new Volvo.
Anyone need the MD21A or parts?
