Volvo MD2030 White Smoke

Hi all,

My port side engine (500hrs) has developed an issue with slow starting and white smoke. Wants to start, seems to take forever, and while trying to start it lets out alot of white smoke. When it finally starts I notice there is also some fuel in the water (from the exhaust outlet). It then proceeds to run as normal and with normal smoke levels.

Does anyone have any ideas to start the ball rolling? Thanks in advance.

Having read many other like threads, it seems the issue may be caused by a leaky injector. (this would explain fuel sheen in water). Seems injectors are fiddly temperamental components that may need proper testing, diesel mechanic and $$$?

Thumbs up Result

Removed all injectors (as per manual) - one being somewhat loose and attributed to the whole unit being loosened when the bleeder nut was loosened on injector 1. Had all tested at diesel specialists (showed the spray pattern etc). 2 of the 3 injectors had poor patterns and were considered "sticky". They showed signs of burn/overheating and needles were replaced and injectors renovated.

Cost $200AU.

Hope this is of help to other cruisers.

Did this cure your white smoke issue as well?

Yes. Normal smoke levels. Had to run it for a few hours to clean it out.

Hard start and white smoke on cold engine is a sign of low compression on one or more cyl of the engine if it runs fine when up to temp I would check the valves for proper valve settings then check comp 300 psi min for that engine

White smoke usually occurs when there is not enough temperature to burn the fuel. The unburned fuel particles are then exhausted, usually with a rich fuel smell. In cold weather, it is not uncommon to get white smoke until engine temperature builds up. Low engine cranking speed can also create an excessive amount of white smoke.
