Volvo md2030 smoke/tapping

Morning all,

We are in the Bahamas and having major problems with our engine. We had a sudden onset of black smoke. It is mostly under load, very little in neutral. The exhaust emits large amounts of smoke and what appears to be soot in the water. The material does not appear to be oily or smell of diesel. Yesterday during a test run we motored around the harbor. Once we got to 2300 rpms smoke started badly. It increased through 2700 rpms where a bad tapping noise started location could not be determined as we had to idle back due to fear of damage.

So far we have checked:
-prop
-air intake
-exhaust elbow(new 3 months ago)
-installed new injectors
-changed fuel filters

I fear we may have a larger problem such as a bad valve or worse which I will be unable to fix.

Does anyone have any ideas of additional items I could check?

Also, does anyone know of a good mechanic in the Georgetown area?
