Volvo MD2030 Oil Leaks onto Sail Drive Boot

Here's a photo looking down on the sail drive. Note that the drive dip stick handle has been snapped off and the stick itself is stuck in the hole. It's the same way on both drives, so at least the clumsy previous owner stepped on the drive in exactly the same way

But I digress.....

We noticed oil sitting in the groove on the rubber boot. It smells like engine oil and not at all like the drive oil (we removed the fill cap to smell the difference). So, having cleaned it up we headed out for sea trial and ran about 4.5 hours total. Of course, both engines had oil in the boot grooves again at the end of the day.

So... I assume that means a leaking rear seal on both engines? If so, is that seal accessible once the sail drive has been removed?

2000 series Volvo's retain the rear main seal in the bell housing. There are then 4 o-rings to seal oil passages between the block and bell housing. They leak all the time.

I guess I'm either lucky or I don't have enough engine hours yet.
I've got a 2020 with about 800 hours.
