Volvo D2-55 white smoke

Hi there, can anyone give me advice as to what could be wrong with my D2-55c. It’s blowing white smoke at 2200 rpm - 2400rpm. It’s done 2500 hours and about 14 years old
Injectors have been reconditioned
Was advised that the Compression was down on a little on 2 & 3 and the exhaust port was slightly wet so I had the valves reseated and head planned
Exhaust elbow has been replaced
Haven’t had the compression re checked
Just thinking I don’t really want to take the motor out to check rings without having address all the easier things first
Could it be
injector pump
Injector timing
Salter water pump
What the best way to test/ check these

Thanks in advance

Re: Volvo D2-55 white smoke

Probably best to get a workshop manual if you want to do work yourself tho maybe someone with yr engine will chime in. I don't know your particular engine so following is just general diesel engine clues.
It wont be the water pump">raw water pump if it's smoke.
Are you sure it's smoke & not steam? Don't mean to insult you but some posters get confused.
Cant hurt to check timing, also tappet clearances.
Yes the low compression can cause that but if only marginally low should not smoke when hot. I'd be thinking another compression test would be a good idea as the problem mite be in the bore clearances.
Unlikely to be injector pump.
Hope you post back if you find out the problem.

Thanks for your input

Iím at anchor now and canít get it to smoke, Iím pulling back on the anchor at 2300rpm- it must need more load

Iíve collected the water from the exhaust, itís slightly warm and looks to have diesel in it. Would I be correct to think it would be the timing

Re: Volvo D2-55 white smoke

It maybe the timing or the low compression or a bad job on the injectors. There are a few reasons for diesel in exhaust.
Is there any blue tinge to the smoke?
Does the engine use much oil?
No water in fuel?

Re: Volvo D2-55 white smoke

It was smoking before the injectors were done
Doesnít use oil
It has a water trap in the fuel line
No blue tinge
Looks like a compression test is next and then timing and pump

I have the work shop manual but it doesnít explain it very well!!

Looks like you heading into a world of pain ( green engine parts prices!)
I'd check valve clearances first before compression test in case an error was made their but if it was smoking before injectors were done that points more to compression.
I doubt it's the injection pump if it's been fed clean fuel but it's possible to get them tested for not too much money but you need to trust the tester as many have the default position of recommending a rebuild. My experience with Diesel services in Auckland was not good.

Bummer the workshop manual isn't clear re timing but maybe a fellow owner will help you out

Re: Volvo D2-55 white smoke

I also have a Volvo D2-55. The only times I have seen white ďsmokeĒ
was when the raw water flow was restricted and what I saw was actually steam. Check to make sure your water flow is adequate before doing anything else.

Re: Volvo D2-55 white smoke

I have a D2 -55 but the problem you speak of could apply to any marinized diesel engine. Here is an interesting article re. white smoke: Marine diesel white smoke from exhaust - Sailing n Cruising

I notice, as others have said that the first thing to do is distinguish whether it's smoke or steam because that will have you looking at different problems whether it's a cooling water problem or a combustion issue. Check engine oil for water contamination, and coolant for oil contamination a blown/leaking/corroded head gasket can cause cross contamination and be a possible cause.

Just one other thing, regarding the comment of "dollar signs flashing before your eyes" I was told by an engine reconditioner that this engine is actually a Perkins engine dressed for the sea, as such once you establish part numbers through the Perkins system the price might be a pleasant surprise. From memory one has to look for numbers cast into the engine block to verify this.

Good hunting and please keep us posted as I have a personal stake in this engine also!

My boat has a D2-55B with about 1600 hours, no problems. Please share
when you identify the problem.

Re: Volvo D2-55 white smoke

You can pretty much rule out steam by measuring different areas on the engine with a cheap infared thermometer looking for hot spots while underway.

Does anyone know how much sea water should pump out the exhaust, the workshop manual doesn’t say

Re: Volvo D2-55 white smoke

Sounds like it's time to adjust the valves and re-check the compression.

It's unlikely that the injection timing has changed because timing is adjusted by adding or removing shims beneath the injection pump, and if the pump hasn't been removed, the timing is unlikely to have changed.

The VP D2-55C base engine is a Perkins 404c-22 and internal components are readily available at reasonable prices.

Maybe one of the other D2-55 owners can tell you how long it takes to fill a bucket.
Has the volume changed noticeably?
Lucky DougR told you the Perkins base engine model as that will save you megabucks compared to going to Volvo dealer.
