Volvio MD 2030 c 2000 heat exchanger.. Help

Hi all

One of our favorite engines.. On my port side... Heat exchanger tube will NOT come out, even after removing all corrosion/biuld-up ?

Anyway got it moved but center busing support slide all the way to one end... !!
I assume the center HE bushing/spacer is essential to make coolant water pass through the inner tubes..? This mean coolant is forced up one side then down the other.. Only separated by this misplaced center bushing..

Actually still not out... But I'll get it tomorrow .. How much sledge hammer is acceptable on a performance sailboat anyway ??

PS ... Have cleaned, sand papered till patience can stand...!!

I don't understand the details of your post. This is a heat exchanger from a MD2030? What does c2000 mean?

There is no bushing in these systems. The heat exchanger is a cylinder of tubes slide into a manifold. The cylinder seals on each end by a rubber boot containing a hose clamp on the cylinder and a hose clamp on the manifold.

What you are describing sounds nothing like the heat exchangers on our MD2030's.

Here is a photo of the heat exchanger from a MD 2030 all cleaned-up and ready to go. Is this what you are looking at? It will not take too much hammer work to ruin one. Rich

Hi ..

I agree looks confusing, that's the year 2000.

My model of heat exchanger tube has 3 rings that seat in the radiator housing. One at each end and one in the middle. The ring/bushing of course also hold the tubes ... On removal the center one seized to the housing and dragged all the way to one end...
Looking at the radiator design it seems the center bushing seals between the 2 sides on the radiator housing to force the water flow through the gaps in the tubes.... It makes sense.
But creates problems for maintenance. On my starboard engine I had no problems, of course.
Not sure why this unit was designed this way, and why such small gaps between tubes, really invites problems.

I am sure I have to get a new unit and further clean up seatings in housing.

See picture.

As you say it seals between the sea and coolant just by the end bell housings ... Far from a good design, Thanks Volvo !

Many heat exchangers have similar tube configurations and use the endcaps to seal the sea and coolant sides. So no difference with yours, other than specific details of the endcap seals.

Ours have always simply slid out of their housings. I do remember having to give them a 1/2 turn twist bringing them out to clear a locating tab or something like that.

Yep ... That's the same unit, now it's out it's evident that the center bushing/spacer on the heat exchanger got seized, with the result when finally removed the center bushing and the 2 tube spacers were dragged/ jammed to one end... What's confusing is that after all housing seatings and the heat exchanges were cleaned complete it still toke a lot if force to remove... The exchanger tube is not bent or deformed ...
Makes no sense, I wonder how the new one will fit....

Got the old out and the new in. But toke far too much rotor wire brush and sanding...way beyond normal cleaning, had to remove metal ??

Anyone else experience this issue with HE on Volvo 2030c 's

Thanks
