Alec

Dead as in badly burnt or just low compression on the cylinder in question?

Thank you for answering but my intention is not to start a discussion on the state of a valve but rather to know what range of price I will have to expect for replacing the valves on my 3 cyl Yanmar.

That depends on more things than your giving up. To totally recondition a head which is the only rational thing to do will cost well into the thousands if someone else is doing the removal and replacement. Replacing valves may involve valve seats, valve guides, springs and even a new head in some scenarios.

Thank you for the explanation.

We do not intend to replace the head, only the valves, springs etc

Re: Valves Replacement on a3 Cylinders Yanmar

You my not wish to rebild the head, but as fsbo said above ya my not have any choice!! Ya just can't replace a valve without redoing at least one valve seat,!! And if you are gonna do that you might as well do them all! Cus if ya don't you will probly be doing it again shortly! At least thats been my experince over 40 yeras of fixing and rebilding diesel engines !! Take it for what it's worth ! but better to do it once then 2 or 3 times !!

That's what I said earlier: ALL valves, and seats, guides, springs...

I still have no idea of the cost....

Re: Valves Replacement on a3 Cylinders Yanmar

you haven't said who is going to the work, machining...

Here is a parts list for e a 3HMF engine rebuild. Once you hit "add these parts to your cart" you will see prices for each item:

3HMF Common Rebuild List Sailboat Supplies, Engine Parts and Boat Parts

Look for the parts you think you need.

I'd say <1k$ in parts and machine shop cost (probably more like 1/2k$. Plus labor to take the head off and put it back on, get the timing right, adjust valves etc, this is the expensive part.

Thank you for your quite complete answer and the list of parts. Very helpful!!

A Yanmar representative mechanic will do the job, and I had no idea of the probable cost.
Based on what you are saying I can expect something between 1500 and 2000$

Thank you again
Alec
