Using the same oil in engine & gear for Yanmar 2GM20

Hi all,

have searched and referenced the Yanmar workshop manual.

recommended transmission oil is 10w-30 (other references specify SAE30)

recommended engine oil for 20-35degC ambient temp is 30 or 40. Here at home, we're in the middle of that range. so I'm going to go for 40.

What would the symptoms/problems be (if any) if SAE40 was used as the transmission and proved too viscous?

Thanks in advance!

Does that transmission have a cone clutch? Are you talking straight 40 wt., or 10-40? In a transmission with clutch plates, there is some drag when cold but it all seems OK when hot using straight 40wt in the tropics. If you are using 10-40 I would not give it a thought regardless of clutch type.

Re: Using the same oil in engine & gear for Yanmar 2GM20

Hi Guy,

Its a cone, and I was thinking of straight 40 in both engine & gear.

Nights are on the avg 26-ish and it gets as hot as 34-ish deg C in the day, occasionally higher...

Thanks!

as you can see, different versions of Yanmar manuals for 2GM20 do state different specs...!

based on the latest documentation found, I've settled on straight 40. now to actually find this oil...

Re: Using the same oil in engine & gear for Yanmar 2GM20

You made this post in mid-June and only one Guy replied??? (It was there, I took it )

The book for my transmission says to use the exact same oil as my engine (4JH2E). When my boat first got me that kinda freaked me out so I asked several diesel mechanics and got several answers. The Yanmar answer is, GO BY THE BOOK. If your transmission isn't in your engine manual then my advice is to e-mail a Yanmar dealer (or two or three) and ask what oil you should use. I say e-mail so you have the answer in WRITING. Transmissions aren't cheap to fix or buy, so if it was me I would attach a photograph the plate on the transmission to your e-mail.

A few years ago Mastry fixed a problem with my transmission, they are "big", Welcome to Mastry Engine Center Ask their service dept., and google for a few other Yanmar service centers to CYA.

BTW, I've seen straight 40 ... it does exist ... somewhere ... it is good to have cruiser friends with boats ...

Re: Using the same oil in engine & gear for Yanmar 2GM20

I have no recollection where I bought it but it does exist - LOL

Knowing me the most likely place is a small chandlery in a row of shophouses on East Coast Road jest west of Telok Kurau Road.

On the corner is Le Peranakan Hotel - just west of there.

I haven't changed my gear oil so I am not sure if I will dump the same stuff in there or not. Probably will...

Straight 40W and 50W (and 20-50W multi-vis) isn't quite as common in the US as it used to be, but most big box stores, and almost all auto parts places will have it (especially in the South).
I see 5W, 5-15W's for sale and have to wonder what kind of protection that 'watch/gun' oil will give a powerplant in the heat, but I guess modern engines are tight.

I've always used Castrol or Valvoline, but most of the other 'name' brands
usually carry 40W too (Shell, Mobil, Quaker, Havoline, etc.), the diesel rated stuff though.

I run straight 40W in my little Yanmar too, have thought about using 50W, or maybe 20-50W, since S. TX is generally hotter than Hades, very much like the Oz outback (mostly used to always use 50W in road vehicles during the summers).

At least if you find it you won't need much .

Your welcome - I have been "treasure hunting" for boat stuff for a long time. It's half the battle of boat ownership here.

Now if I could just find a line on spools of 14AWG marine wire (at a reasonable or slightly unreasonable cost) I would be happy! I need two 500 foot spools.

I am shipping a bunch of stuff from the US but wire is unreasonable heavy...

Thanks - I will check that out. I usually have stuff drop shipped to my brother in SFO and then reshipped.

I am buying a bunch of stuff from amazon and will check it out. I haven't tried shipping direct but have been meaning to.

I will fill up my cart and then try both addresses and see the difference.

Cheers!

Re: Using the same oil in engine & gear for Yanmar 2GM20

it took me a while to figure out how to get Amazonglobal to work...
1. It must be eligible to be shipped outside of US
2. It cannot be mixed with non Amazonglobal eligible items
3. Cart has to exceed US125 (very easily done )
4. it has to be fulfilled by Amazon (see screenshot)

practice shopping makes perfect!
