Used Volvo Penta 2003 for Sale.

the guy selling this Diesel engine says the compression each Cylinder is 190.
I am trying to find factory specs. on this. Is that a good number for this
model engine? Again it is a 2000 year, Volvo Penta 3 cylinder 29 HP model 2003 Natural Aspirated. Asking $1250.00 for it. No Transmission. Thanks

Re: Used Volvo Penta 2003 for Sale.

Hmm, not sure its a year 2000 model, I thought Volvo changed to the 2020, 2030 and 2040 series early 199x. Certainly our 1989 model is one of the later ones. Difficult to start in cold climates because they lack any cold start mechanism compared to todays modern car diesels.

Also be aware of the gearbox spline problem but this is easily sorted.

That aside Volvo made thousands of the things and lots including ours still running nicely and I hope for at least another decade.

Is it big enough for a 46ft boat?

Can't help with the compression figures though.

Re: Used Volvo Penta 2003 for Sale.

I'm fairly sure that Volvo stopped made the 2003 model from 1983 to 1990. So this is not a year 2000 engine.

http://www.volvopenta.com/volvopenta...n_engines.aspx

Click onto the above link (Volve Penta website) and type in 2003 in the "engine type" box, for data sheets and info on this engine,

We have a 2003 in our 40' cruiser racer, and for the nearly 7 years that we have owned her, it has been very reliable and given us no real problems.

Having said that, 29hp does seem a little light for a 46-footer. I wouldn't want anything smaller on our boat, and we only weight around 7.5 tons fully laden. In fact I'd probaly prefer a little more horsepower. For a 46-foot cruising boat, I'd be thinking significantly more. Horses for courses, though, I guess.

Volvo stopped the 2000 series engines (2001,2002,2003,2003T) in 1990 or so and went on to the 2030 (for 3 cylinder) series.

Our 2003 is from 1986. We've been cruising upto 45 degree's south and it starts fine provided you use the cold start procedure of pulling the stop leaver full out and back in before turning the key.

Re: Used Volvo Penta 2003 for Sale.

I used to have the 2003 compression specs, but I left them on my old boat. If you google enough you can find them listed. The most important thing is that they are reasonably close to each other. Is the owner paying you to take the engine or does he want you to pay for it? It would not be my first choice of a used engine, at any price. Maybe good for spares if you already have a 2003 install.

Re: Used Volvo Penta 2003 for Sale.

I have a 1985 2003 on the boat, still runs OK, a little hard in starting. The shop manual says compression (naturally aspirated) is 17.5:1. That gives a pressure of about 250, so 190 sounds pretty low (assuming we are using psi here). The manual also says at "starter motor speeds" (which I assume you would get during a compression test) 2-2.5 MPa => 290 to 360 psi.

Hello.

To all owners of 2000 series Volvo Penta Diesel engines what ever the size. single cylinder, twin, three cylinder or T3. The inherent failure problem of 20 tooth spline on the shaft of the MS2B transmission to Damper has been solved. Contact Barbara Mark of Next Wave marine on Vancouver's Island, British Columbia for details. The solution can be installed with simple tools no machining of parts required.

I am NOT the sales rep for this! I just happen to own the prototype.

Do you know of any leads for a reverse gear transmission for the Volvo 2003 in the Toronto area?
