unknown Volvo Penta engine

I have an engine that has 'Volvo Penta' cast into the side in raised letters. Under that it has a number sequence = 10005-8 (where the 'dash' appears to be an open box). On a raised flat area under that there is another number sequence = 88030 or 88080 although all I can make out is 8800. I have tried putting these numbers into the VolvoPenta search engine but get no hits. Can anyone please tell me what engine I have and the relevant details? It is attached to a 'V' drive transmission; MS 2. KGMS2V, 1843021.

Re: unknown Volvo Penta engine

How many cylinders?

I'm going to guess the 2001/2002/2003 series (model numbers from the 80's/90's, not year), as these were commonly fitted with the MS2 "V" drive.

Volvo has an online "out of production" database here:

Engine database - Engine database : Volvo Penta

Or how about a picture?

This is the 2003:

Re: unknown Volvo Penta engine

The number of cylinders depends on who you ask - there are four things that look like injectors, two on the top and two lower down on one side of the engine; and they all have to be bled. Some say it is a two cylinder engine and the lower 'injectors' are associated with the fuel return, but, others say that it has four cylinders in a v-4 configuration turned sideways. This is the first diesel engine I have owned so I have little experience with determining this. It really looks similar to the picture you included so I put the 2002 into the engine database to see if I could get a picture but none came up. I am going to try to upload a picture soon but I am on a very slow EDGE connection so sometimes things don't load or take a long time. Thanks for your response.

Re: unknown Volvo Penta engine

The 2000 series were all clearly 3 cylinder engines

I vote for the 2002, a 2-cylinder engine (the 2001 is one cylinder, the 2002 is two cylinder, and the 2003 is three cylinder). Here are a couple of photos:

What you describe for fuel connections can be seen in these two photos; connections to each cylinder near the top of the engine in the first photo (near the number 18), and connections lower down on the opposite side as shown in photo 2 (item #1, pointed to by the lines).

This series of engines has an individual injection pump for each cylinder. The connection at the top near the valve cover is the injector, the connection on the back side mid-way down is the injection pump (item #1 in the second photo).

Since you say you have a slow connection, here are the basic specs from the Volvo website:

And here is the production information. For the most part you probably only need to know "2002", but at the end of the production period there were a couple of minor changes that can make a difference depending on what parts you need.

"This series of engines has an individual injection pump for each cylinder.
