Running with no air cleaner will most certainly shorten the engine's life.

Re: Universal Engines

I'm on my second M25XP/ Kubota D950. My last had 5200hrs. and still ran and started like it always had, and at least a month ago still was. I have a Kubota tractor with a D1005 with 3600hrs. still going strong and I rebuilt another M25XP to put in my present boat. One significant factor is I have dry exhaust and keel cooling (powerboat) so I don't have the problems of a wet exhaust system, mixing elbow, water pump">raw water pump, etc.. Also I don't subject my engine to excessive idling or low RPM running under load and do oil and coolant changes on schedule as well as valve adjustments. Kubota's are fine engines for a small relatively high RPM engine, I get all my parts at the tractor dealer. I've looked on the Torrenson Marine website for the same parts and I can't believe somebody gets that much money without a gun. I believe with proper maintenance and proper operation a small Kubota can do 10000hrs.. I had a Lister once with almost 30k when I rebuilt it.

Re: Universal Engines

Changed out the injectors, seemed to do the trick. Got the injectors from the local diesel rebuild shop for fairly inexpensive..<$100. CAN. Engine with 2000 hours so was due. Also found a stock Kubota air cleaner with a washable element for $39. out of Nebraska truck shop. Much smoother and quieter running. Left the thermostat as it was, as that is the engine spec. I believe the cooler running engine is the 5411, a smaller block.

Re: Universal Engines

Sounds like it all was a great bargain.

Re: Universal Engines

Well, the bargain was that the local Kubota dealer had those injectors in Stock. Some prices from marine dealers are ridiculous. The point being is to look around for parts, rather than buying from a boat shop. The V1501 kubota that goes by universal 5432, is a tough little engine. My fairly minor issues are likely just operator error, and my aim is to fix what I can before it escalates into something that requires major surgery.
