I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with this engine and what their opinion was. Or if there are any specific problems to watch out for.

it's a 20+ YO raw water cooled engine. Replace it with something better.

I have similar questions about what is purported to be a Universal 5414. I can't find information about this model anywhere and was wondering if perhaps the ad was a misprint. I htought someone had said that they are made by Kubota?

Kubota does not make marine engines for the US market. Period end of story.


Several companies, Universal, Beta, Nanni, Phasor; etal buy industrial engines from Kubota and marinize them under their own names.

That's helpful - thank you. What is the reputation of the Universal 5414? The advertisment indicates the engine is rated at 50 hp. I just can't find any references for the engine. Google doesn't bring it up

5414 wasn't a valid model number. Sure it's not a 5444? (M50)

It could well be. When I was not able to find reference to the indicated model I assumed a misprint, but have not had an opportunity to check. What is the reputation of the model 5444?
