I've just had an
engine survey on a Ford
Lehman 4cyl 85hp
diesel + Paragon
Transmission.
The
engine was rebuilt around 3 years ago and has about 10 hours use. The reason for low hours is that the
boat as been in
refurb.
The engine fired right up on first ignition and had very little smoke and vibration. In fact the
mechanic raved about the operation thus far into the
survey. All things were going well until it came time to check the fluids.
When the
transmission was syphoned it came out a PeptoBismal pink and was obviously contaminated. Then the
oil came out and, although it looked ok, was later analyzed to be contaminated with high amounts of metals and sodium.
The owner insists that the issues can be fixed after some root cause analysis and
repair (replacing the
oil cooler and heat exchanger), but I'm not so sure and need
advice from those with more experience. Is pursuing the
purchase of this
boat a
lost cause?
Thanks in advance.
