Tohatsu/Nissan 18 hp 2 St Vs Yamaha 15 Enduro

Hi folks,

Sometime soon I am up for a new outboard and it will be a 2 stroke.

Theres two in contention that I would like some advice.
The Yamaha 15 hp 2 Stroke Enduro
25-8ps Enduro Models - Consumer Products | YAMAHA MOTOR CO., LTD.
And the Tohatsu/Nissan 18 hp 2 Stroke
TOHATSU 18 HP 2-STROKE prices, specs, manuals and brochures.

The price difference is $500!!!! The Yamaha Enduro being the more expensive. (Please remember the price difference is actual, not negotiable)

One set of considerations is the Enduro is designed for fishermen who use it for long hours daily. My use is daily but only for a few minutes at a time, and occasionally for a bit longer but never for 8 hours solid. My cruising 'life' isnt going to be more than ten years, i.e by then i will have had enough and gone home.

So would you buy the more leisure oriented faster engine, or the heavily built one?

Thanks for the thoughts.

Re: Tohatsu/Nissan 18 hp 2 St Vs Yamaha 15 Enduro

We were in this same predicament a year ago. After much research and thinking, we decided on the Tohatsu 18hp.

We didn't buy it though because of a snafu at the dealer - where magically, their warehouse was broken into the night before we were to pick it up and only our engine was stolen. They could have another the following week, but there was a significant "price increase" just that day and they couldn't sell it for the same price as our "stolen" one. Ah well.

We told them to pound dirt and bought a Suzuki 20hp 4-stroke instead. Very happy with that.

Everyone here will insist you must have the Enduro because it is a magical engine that has heaps of spare parts and sublime mechanics waiting for it everywhere you go, but I think that Tohatsu 18hp is a very good engine and a better all-round deal - and I have found Tohatsu dealers/parts everywhere in the Caribe.

One of the reasons we were going for the Tohatsu was the alternator and electric start, which we wanted. You cannot get either for the Enduro.

All in all, you probably can't go wrong with either engine.

Re: Tohatsu/Nissan 18 hp 2 St Vs Yamaha 15 Enduro

i've got both, although in a smaller size. a yamaha 3hp 2 stroke and a nissan (tohatsu) 3.5hp 2 stroke. they both run equally well. tohatsu parts seem to be a bit cheaper but yamaha parts seem to be more available in my area (central florida).

having spent part of my life in the manufacturing game, i rate the yamaha as being 'better built' then the tohatsu, whatever that means. my personal feeling is that either will do well if properly taken care of.

Thanks for the advice.

Now Tohatsu has brought out a fishermans type 18 hp to go up against the Yamaha Enduro, and its priced between the normal 18 and the Yamaha.

S I am back to being confused agoin. Lol.

My preference is the Yamaha. I owned an 8hp and a 15hp and I loved the 15 but it was not the Enduro model. Never had a problem with the 15 in over 4 years cruising. Weight is a big factor with me, the Yamaha was around 80 lbs I think although I'm told the Enduro is heavier. How heavy is the Tohatsu ?? I'm in the market myself when we get down that way.

I have a Tohatsu 18 and it's excellent. 4 years of constant use, I don't know how many hours, but well over 1000. I recently changed the impellor, and the original one was still in perfect condition.

Can't compare the Yamaha, as I haven't owned one, but can certainly recommend the Tohatsu.

All the ones Im looking at are 41 kgs, up from 36 kgs of the 9.9 and 15hp mercury. So an extra 10 pounds.

The old muscles!!!

Re: Tohatsu/Nissan 18 hp 2 St Vs Yamaha 15 Enduro

Mark, how is the normal Yamaha 15 price compared to the two that you mention? That engine is a very common choice hereabouts, and ours is now 8 years old, constant usage, essentially zero care (original impeller, second set of plugs, only fresh water flushed when we go up a river...) and going well. I see no particular reason to use the Enduro over the "regular" 15.

Cheers,

Jim

Jim,
I don't think the regular 15 is available in the Caribbean, only the Enduro

According to what I heard on Cruiseheimers a few weeks go, the same 2 stroke Yamaha that was available in the US is available in the Bahamas. I saw non Enduros for sale at Minns in Georgetown in 2012. Perhaps they are available in the Caribbean.

Re: Tohatsu/Nissan 18 hp 2 St Vs Yamaha 15 Enduro

The non-Enduro Yamaha 2-stroke may have been the best 15hp engine ever made. It is quite different (and much lighter) than the Enduro 15hp. I have never seen anything except Enduros throughout the Caribe. I know the non-Enduro is still sold in Australia and Asia.

The difference in weight between the Enduro 15hp and the Tohatsu 18hp is 1kg in the Enduro's favor - 40kg vs 41kg (88lbs/90lbs). The non-Enduro 15hp is 35kg (79lbs).

Been happy for over six years with my NotSoHotSu 18hp 2/stroke. Fires up every time and I do tend to abuse small outboards a bit.

The 18 Tohatsu has the power of closer to a 20 or 25. I had an older 1990 or so model and had WAY more power than a mercury 15. I believe the new motor available outside the US is basically the same as the one I had.
