Tips on Cleaning the Diesel Tank

My boat has been on land for almost two years now. When I left the boat I checked the dieseltank, and was chocked over how dirty it was inside (almost like rust), probably bad fuel I got i Africa or Cuba.
Anyway, the tank has to be cleaned. Right now its topped with diesel, so that has to come out aswell. My plan is to drain the tank for diesel and take it out in the open. The tank is made of aluminium mounted in the aft cabin (220 litres) of a Jeanneau 44.

Does anyone have any advice on how, and what to use when cleaning the tank? Anything I should be aware of taking it out etc?

Any feedback would be appreciated

Cheers, Zniggy

You will need to do the following: 1) remove the fuel from your tanks, 2) open (or install) access ports in the tank, 3) scrub and clean inside of the tank ( I used windex and scouring pads). This is an awkward job to do if you leave the tank in the boat. In my case it was a lot easier to leave the tanks in the boat. Here is a link to some other discussions that have occurred on cleaning tanks. Fuel Tank Acces Ports
Good luck with it.
