Thermostat replacement

Are there any major caveats for replacing a thermostat on a (Universal) diesel? It seems the bolts on the thermostat housing are going to be a bitch to get out. Other than that, anything else to worry about?

Thanks!

What model Universal? I have an M2-12 and just replaced my thermostat - not a problem at all. You'll want to replace the gasket - I ordered three or so at the same time I ordered my thermostat. Other than that, not much too it.

I replaced the thermostat. Was quite simple. I also planned to replace the petcock. I assume the petcock is used to bleed air out of the cooling system? Anyway, the old one was frozen in there and was not installed properly. It was not screwed in deep enough. The engine now reaches around 140 which implies that the thermostat was bad. Could the petcock not working properly cause the thermostat to work incorrectly?
