Testing setup w/o full complement of batteries installed

I am converting my 20' 3000 lb. sailboat from diesel to electric. The 48V motor setup will come from

Since the boat won't go into the water until next spring I would like to put off purchasing and installing batteries until then to see 1) what will fit after the motor is in and 2) what is on sale then(hoping LiFePO4 will be affordable).
Can I install the motor and all it's connections now and test that all works as it should with my old 12v deep cycle battery? Is there any other way to test without installing a complete 48V battery system?
