Storing an Outboard?

When an outboard is placed into storage (multiple months) should the gas be left in or run out?

Re: Storing an Outboard?

It should be run out, the unit flushed using fresh water and the cylinders fogged with an appropreate spray.

I run my engine dry each time I use it and never would let gas stay in it for more than a couple days. If you use gas with ethanol then it'll gum up your carb's jets very quickly if left in the carb.

I didn't ask if it is two cycle or four cycle but either way it's good to always use fresh gas.

kind regards,

Re: Storing an Outboard?

Use Stabil in the gas and it will last for 12+ months. The only thing with running it dry is that there is still lots of gas in the carb that will gum up. Running it "dry" is not really dry it just runs until there's not enough fuel in the bowl to run the engine. Stabil is a great product and is used religiously in anything I have to store for long periods. Everything with it has always started on the first or second try after using it. (also search this topic it has been fought over in detail before)
