Starting an '02 Volvo Penta

Hey Guys,

I once found a volvo penta 2002 owners manual online and downloaded it, had a good read and found there was a choke system on it. I have since crashed my computer and lost the manual. Does anyone know where to find the owners ( not workshop ) manual or know how the choke works. I now have a volvo 2002 and and having a hard time starting it.

There is no "choke" on a diesel engine.

What you are refering to is the cold start function.

I believe you advance the throttle to full and bring back to 1/2-2/3 throttle before starting.

This "sets" the rack to provide extra fuel for starting.

On my 2003s you advance the throttle in neutral, then pull the fuel shut off out and push back in. That sets it for extra fuel at start. Pat (Never Monday) showed me this when he overhauled my 2003s.

Thanks George, that rings a bell. Does it turn itself off or is there another trick to returning it back to normal?

That's right...I forgot the "stop part".....It resets itself once you move the throttle after starting.

It returns to normal when you move throttle to neutral position.

It was a big help for me. I operated this boat for 7 years without knowing this "secret hand shake" and it was a bear to start on cold days.

I have a "Hand Starting Crank" for the Volvo Penta 2002 but not sure how it attaches to the Camshaft. Can any one give advice what is needed to attach the crank to the shaft?

Just stick it on that nub that's jutting out from the front (flywheel end) of the engine. I think it's the one above the impeller. But it won't do much good. Very hard to start even with a battery.

The crank goes on the end of the shaft which has a cover on it (front of engine), well it did when new. Also don't forget most VP 200X engines have a decompression lever on the front of the rocker cover.

Keep hold of that crank, they are worth there weight in gold. I don't think I can use one because the crank would be very close to the saloon floor and there is a real risk of knuckles hitting the floor.

Never seen a hand start connect to the cam, that's nuts, first you overload the cam drive and if that's not bad enough since the cam is driven at half speed compared to the crank, your hand start lever is twice as hard to turn.

Tell me this isn't true, is it?

Erm, its true

However, there is a valve lifter to help. Once upon a time we had a diving compressor that started like this, but then I was 30 years younger and it normally took two of us to start it.

I am rather surprised that they bothered to put a hand crank on the 2000 series Volvos, since they have a much lighter flywheel (at the back of the engine) than the monster hunk of iron at the front of the older MD series that they call a flywheel. The weight of that big flywheel is what will get the engine thru a compression stroke, once you have it turning fast enough, and drop the decompression lever. Has anyone been successful at hand starting a 2000 series Volvo??? Just curious. ______Grant.

I think they only put the hand crank on the 2001 and 2002, none on the 2003. I had a 2002 with hand crank in 1984. Never even attempted cranking.

I had an MD2B and was never successful on it!
