starter motor 2qm20

I cant seem to get a win at the moment. After getting water in my cyclinders which I still have the head off I now have a problem with the starter.

I actually bought a new reconditioned one as I thought the old one had **** itself.

So I have a brand new battery bought today with 660 cca. I have brand new 220amp battery cables going to the starter. I have the positive hooked up to the positive on the battery and the other one hooked up to the negative on the battery. The negative one also has a cable that runs from the solenoid into the starter. When I put another positive cable to the ignition pole I can hear the switch throw the cog out but she doesnt turn. I have tried crossing the - and + at the solenoid to see if the motor will spin up and all I get is a tonne of sparks.....Buggered if I know what to do?

I have tried without the negative and also just tried grounding the negative on the block but then i get nothing.

Any suggestions?

I am pretty sure thats how i had it before but i could be wrong. I thought positive travels through the solenoid and that wire from the solenoid to the starter completes the circuit?

Re: starter motor 2qm20

There is a post in SAIL magazine this month by Nigel Calder on rebuilding starter solenoids. Check the points. It can be a simple diagnosis and fix. Do you have a volt meter? Put it across the terminals on the solenoid. In a standard set up, it should read zero volts when the ignition switch is turn on.

Re: starter motor 2qm20

On my 2GM20F the positive goes to the starter and the starter goes to ground to complete the circuit.

That's good. Here is the wiring schematic for my 2GM20F. Be advised, they do vary from boat to boat. This is for the earlier models with tach.

Re: starter motor 2qm20

If you search for "broken piece in engine" it may help. I had a piece broken off the gear end bell and wedged in by the fly wheel. It started after replacing the starter on a 3GM. Good luck
