Re: Sorry, another oil thread

there is a lot more to engine wear than just soot, moisture is a main culprit, there are 3 types of moisture in an engine and none are good for it.
the best way to eliminate moisture is regular oil changes.

Not so in ones that take 40 litres to fill.

Plus for our engine we were warned away from it, to low a viscosity and a great way to start it leaking we were told.
Even old 671s are 26 qts. deep pan. Not $10.

I know there is moisture, and it forms acid among other things, like sludge. But have never heard of three types?

  • Disolved moisture : From ambient air humidity.

  • Emulsified Moisture : Disolved Moisture that has had the crap beaten out of it.

  • Free Moisture: basically just water sitting in the bottom of your sump.

Re: Sorry, another oil thread

My old (O-L-D!) 1979 Volvo MD11C (with a design dating back another decade) specs 100 hours for oil changes. Oil has come a LONG way since then, and diesel oil itself has come a long way since then. I've run oil samples a few times at the 100 hour oil change, and they come back with LOTS of life left. TBN, the acid fighter, is less than 20% consumed, etc. Bottom line, I've shifted to changing it every fall regardless of hours run (although I don't think I've ever hit a 150 hour season, so I'm not much over the original spec).

With regard to oil and engine life.... I routinely run my cars 20+ years and 250K miles, and never had an an engine fail (well, from oil -- do timing belts or blown head gaskets or dropped valves/seats count?). My father's 1979 Perkins 4-236 is just over 10,000 hours, and he can't think of a reason to do anything with it besides another lap on the ICW. I'm not sure if I even KNOW anyone with an engine that failed, especially one that can be blamed on oil. I've never understood the "oil is cheap insurance" argument -- it sounds good, but it's hard to find examples of failures!
