SO I DON'T GET RIPPED OFF

Yanmar had a recall years ago on 3YM30 for the tube stack. Which I missed because the boat wasn't mine the time. Had to shell out $750.00 for this. Approx how long would you estimate it would take a mechanic to replace this. I have the parts. An hour? Thanks for input.

It's part for heat exchanger.

I've been in North America so long I thought that "tubestack" was English ... it's the stack of tubes inside the heat exchanger.

For me that job involves removing both the kitchen sink and the alternator. On my engine there is also a zinc back there, and once I've opened up access I'm going to replace it at the same time whether it needs it or not.

Assuming the old tube-stack isn't somehow stuck, then I could probably get the whole thing done in one to two hours.

However if I were so clumsy to drop a bolt into the bilge ... then the job takes on a whole new dimension if I choose to take on the adventure of chasing after it.

thanks for the clarification!

it is probably a min 3 hour job as tubes get corroded in the housing and hard to remove in place, plus hoses might need replacing.

Yanmar has a time limit for a recall?

If your motor wasn't repaired for their defective part(s) seems like they should still honor that recall.

Re: SO I DON'T GET RIPPED OFF

All depends. Just replaced two on my engine, one for the engine oil, one for the hydraulic transmission fluid. One took 10-15 mins, the other took an hour.

Re: SO I DON'T GET RIPPED OFF

I'm confused, are you upgrading or replacing with new? If the one you have is bigger then it wouldn't be a recall issue anyway.

Yanmar 3YM30 tube stack

Have you contacted Yanmar to see if it's still covered under recall?

That's what I thought, but no, I had to pay.

Well, I finally found out where to get the parts and I had to save the money. I now have the parts and the mechanic that I had do some work on my engine was the one that told me about the recall, so I asked him how much he would charge me for the recall job and he said $500. Well, when I finally found out that it wasn't covered and had to pay, the parts were $750 alone, so I don't know why this mechanic was quoting $500 for the job.

Re: SO I DON'T GET RIPPED OFF

Where in Florida are you?

I’d say it will take somewhere between 1/2 hour and 5 hours. May also needs seals or orings for the end caps. Depending on how engine is installed in boat, it’s possible entire heat exchanger may have to come off.

I'm up in Norfolk, Va now. Everything else on engine is good to go. I can use my engine, just not push it because it will overheat. Thanks for the input.
