Small diesel engine issue...kind of baffled!

Went out for a sail yesterday and was motoring in when the engine RPMs dropped and the engine just stopped. Once we sailed onto a mooring, I checked the Racor first and the bowl was empty. There was still fuel in the tank.

This morning, I took the fuel line off the pickup tube on the tank, hooked up my priming bulb and could not pump any fuel out. I removed the pickup tube from the tank and discovered it wasn't as long as I had thought, so it appears I did "run out" of fuel even though there was still about a gallon in the bottom. I filled the tank with fresh diesel, primed it with the bulb until it came out of the bleed valve and closed it. Tried to start it back up and it will turn over a couple of times but it won't run. I checked the Racor and the fuel filter on the engine and both are spotless. I can get a bunch of fuel out of the bleed valve and some comes out of the injectors if I crack them open a bit.

I'm kind of perplexed here, any ideas??

Bleed it again and hit all the spots in order.

And dont flood the engine with seawater. If you keep cranking your pumping water and it will go wrong way iin the exhaust.

Sabray makes a very good point. Did that once. Never again. Make certain when you are bleeding the injectors that you have the seacock closed. Only open it when you are ready to start the engine and don't crank too many times before you close it again.
You probably still have air bubbles in your fuel lines. You need a (no bubbles or foam) spurt at your injectors in order to get the engine to fire right.

If you cranked for awhile with the seacock open it is possible water got in the engine.Also could be too much back pressure if the muffler s full of water.Might need to drain the muffler.marc
