So, I need new engine controls - the single lever type with a knob or button for neutral... any recommendations / thoughts / comments appreciated. Thanks.

Pedistal mount or on the side of the cockpit? Vetus makes a nice one for the cockpit side ,I think Edson can supply one for the Pedistal

I had twin levers for a single engine on my old boat, and I must say I like that arrangement better. Anyway, there this: Whitworths Marine: Single Lever Sail Engine Control

You might want to read this article and Google the products mentioned. I talked with the folks at Spinlok -- and the product is perfect for my next project. While you can no longer get the product "as is", the guy at Spin lok told me how to buy the missing part from another company and marry that part with his. Total cost would be about 400$ if I recall correctly.

I am not sure if this information fits what you are looking for, but if it fits, then it is worth the posting!

That is it!! That is the missing piece: Marry the Teleflex with the Spinlok and you have an engine control that is your winch handle and that can be removed when not needed so not to be in the cockpit by your feet tripping you.

I have a single on my current boat and really dislike it. I much prefer the dual lever I had on my previous boat. When I have the time to move the controls from the side of the cockpit near my ankle where it is now, up to the steering pedestal I will also switch to dual lever.

One note of caution with the single lever throttle/shifter. Where the cable goes through the yoke it is a stress point, if it breaks at that location you cannot get the engine out of gear. It has happened to us and to others I've talked too. If you go this way, cycle the shifter prior to starting the engine.

We have been using the Morse single lever control for many years (as detailed by Delmarry in his earlier post) and have never had a problem with one. If the cables are correctly adjusted, these controls are smooth operating and I have seen them working well when they are 30 years old. I dont know what control you have but suspect that if you have a problem with breaking cables, it is an inferior product or a faulty installation.

Although I (personally) don’t like them, it might be noted that Yanmar (for instance) specifies a Single Lever control:

Ours was a Yanmar engine with a Teleflex single lever control, our friends Cabo Rico with a Universal and a Teleflex single lever control both had the same problem. The cable housing broke where it goes through the slot and bound the engine in gear. Maybe we are just tough on boats?
