Shortening Engine Control Cables

Is it possible to shorten engine control cables and if so how do you do it?

My throttle and diesel shut-off cables are both too long and flop over into the locker space where they are exposed to stuff being thrown down into the locker.

probably Teleflex or Morse cables. You have to buy new ones sized right with the right terminations. take the old ones off and measure then deduct the amount you want them shortened.

Nope. You will need to purchase the correct length. It takes a specialized crimping tool and machining process that the manufacturer uses to produce shift and throttle cables. The good news is they are not all that expensive.

Actually it depends...
Yes for replacing throttle with a threaded end. Available in one foot increments.
The shut off typically does not have an end fitting. Usually only come in 2 lengths I think. I had one about 3 feet too long. I disconnected it, Laid it out to correct length and marked the outer sleeve. I then pulled back on the handle equal to an amount the the control wire was sticking out originally and cut strait across with a cutting wheel. Push handle back in and you are good to go. Do not cut it with a crushing type tool (pliers, wire cutters, cable cutters, etc) or you will get to buy a new one.

Make a 360º loop in the cable attaching the point where it crosses itself and a point 180º out to a block screwed or otherwise fastened to a bulkhead with a couple of wire zip-ties each. The size of the loop will determine how much you shorten the cable.
