I am unfamiliar with an Amazon 49. Is the builder known for high quality or shortcuts?

High quality, not shortcuts.

But stick to the question of the OP. In my experience on my boat, there is no problem with having the two diesel engines plumbed together with a common fuel pickup and return. But the OP could have smaller fuel lines, so for him it's possible it could cause a problem with the two engines running simultaneously. More information needed from the OP.

Re: Separate fuel return fittings in tank?

It’s impossible to advise without knowing more details such as the engine models and the fuel line size.
Some diesel engines return 90% of the fuel, some return 10%. Fuel line sizes and pressure ratings vary considerably.

All I can say is it will probably be ok if you tee in at the tank fitting. Hopefully you won’t overpressure your return line.

Does that give you enough confidence to take a shortcut?

I love this logic- it works on my setup, so it must work on EVERY setup! (It reminds me of the perennial debate over whether or not you should leave your tranny in gear while sailing)

You need to read the manuals for your particular engines, understand them, and then you can make an informed decision.

Or, second best, listen to the folks giving general guidance about how these systems generally work, and hope for the best.

But never do something because someone with different hardware than you states definitively how your (unspecified) hardware will behave. They don’t know the specifics of your installation, and their ham-handed approach to logical induction makes anything they say suspect anyways, imho.

Re: Separate fuel return fittings in tank?

It works fine, just tee into the return line. I've done it 3-4 times.
