Re: seized Perkins 4236

Spare are available everywhere for these engines - perhaps a rebuild/ refurbish will work out cheaper than a replacement?

Re: seized Perkins 4236

Can I assume that the Perkins is in your boat?

I suppose it depends on your mechanical skills and money available.

Good mechanically? Start to take things apart.
Have some money? Call a mechanic and get it out and reconditioned.
Have plenty of money? Order a new engine.

Either way your boat needs an engine (unless you're related to Lin and Larry Pardey), so it is either repair or replace.

If you need manuals, diagrams, etc I can copy or scan them for you (I have the same engine).

Re: seized Perkins 4236

Forgot to add:
I am biased:
- My previous boat was an Hartley as well, with a small 3 cyl Perkins
- My campervan has a Perkins as well, never a problem with that

Therefore I would say: Fix it yourself or get it fixed

If you can do the work, it's much cheaper to rebuild, depending why it seized. It's cheaper for a mechanic to rebuild it out of the boat if you can remove it. A different engine is a new alignment, fuel line, wiring changes and new controls.

Re: seized Perkins 4236

That's the best engine Perkins made- and they made a lot of good engines. Can be rebuilt many times, and should be very reliable when rebuilt. Of course it depends somewhat on why it is seized; but there's not much about those engines that can't be fixed. Roll up your sleeves...

Re: seized Perkins 4236

That is a a good suggestion. I would like to have a manual to start taking it apart and to see if it turns. Thanks

Re: seized Perkins 4236

Since seizing up has nothing to do with the marine conversion parts, you can almost always find Perkins parts at tractor dealers, or even have your engine rebuilt at an industrial shop rather than a pricier marine business. They are a great engine. ____Grant.

Re: seized Perkins 4236

Hi LS79
Rather than scan the many pages of a manual, I found one on-line for this engine, 168 pages in pdf format, adding up to 19 Mb:
http://www.endeavourowners.com/dscsn...p%20Manual.pdf

Hope that will give you a start.

Re: seized Perkins 4236

Have you determined what has caused seizure ie, lubrication loss , over heating [coolant] , mechanical or cyl flooding. Was the motor running when seizure happened ? if so under what load and circumstances. What type of cooling system was being used.

Re: seized Perkins 4236

Hi Fellad,
Well i rolled up my sleeves and started taking it apart and i think i found the problem. I found out that when i removed the rocker assembly from the cylinder head one of the push rods is missing. Oh boy that looks like a tough one. I do not know even how to get in there. Does anybody know if for that the engine has to be removed from the boat to get in it from underneath. Cheers
