Option #2

I have moved the motor mount "tube/shaft" so that is is now farther away the stern of the boat. There was a second adjustment setting that allowed for this. This tube slides in the stern of the boat and has a keeper pin that holds it in place. In this position I can mount another plate that extends down another 5 inches without hitting the stern. Then I can redrill holes in that plate to mount the spring assist motor mount. I hope that extra 5" inches does the trick.

I will post photos of whatever I do so everyone can have a good laugh! Seriously though....Thanks for the help!

Option 2 is exactly what I did. Make sure the shaft is locked in the tube under the cockpit. Mine had worked loose with the Po. Luckily when crawling around under there I noticed(actually a buddy did) the keeper pin was gone. We repositioned farther astern and redrilled 2 keeper pins.
I positioned the 2nd plate about 2" above the water line.

Re: San Juan 7.7 Outboard Motor Mount

Sorry, first post and thread drift, but this vessel is on my short list to fit in a 27' slip. What's the headroom in one of these? Headroom ain't a deal breaker but I thinkin' I'd be somewhat less hunched over than in the SJ24 I once had.....
Thanks!

I am 5'7 and I have to just tilt my head a little:-) so I would say 5'6 -1/2 for headroom.
And welcome to the forum!

Thanks! I 'm about .5" taller so, palatial compared to prior boat.
As an aside, when selling aforementioned SJ24 a buyer from Alberta inquired as he and a buncha' dingy sailors were "tired of getting their butts wet" and looking to start a fleet on Lake Wabunum (sp?). Wonder if they ever did.
Is that where your 7.7 is? Does it have the deep or shallower keel?

Yup, I'm on wabamun. There are a few 24' (maybe 23's) down at one of the yacht clubs on the other end.
I know that sylvan lake by red deer does some racing with them as well. One of the racers is who I bought my 7.7 off of.
Mine is the 4.5' draft. Including the lead shoe that was apparently after market. If you by one, I highly recommend this addition. It balances very well and easily.
Where are you at, that an Albertan bought your 24?

Yes, as I'll be racing the snot out of it I'd ideally like to find one of the later builds that came w/a dk. Found contact info for what was the source for all things San Juan, Port Gardner Sailboats, but the long time proprietor, Gene Adams I think his name was, died recently and don't know if it's still in business.

South coast, he didn't end up buying it. Contacted me through the class asso. iirc correctly.

If you end up getting one, stay in touch. I always like talking about them, San Juan's are great boats.
Another forum I'm on, sailboatowners dot Com, has a few members with them. If you look in the San Juan forum(not really active) there are some old posts with Mods and refit ideas. I found a few good ideas there.
Good luck

Re: San Juan 7.7 Outboard Motor Mount

Thanks, that'll work if I shrink half an inch.

Got two of those w/deep keel to look at in next couple wks.

Got a slip assigned at local marina, pressure is on.....

Re: San Juan 7.7 Outboard Motor Mount

You say with the deep keel...
7.7 had one keel style, early models just didn't have the lead shoe(draft difference of less than 6")
San Juan 26 had a shoal draft. But it is a much slower boat. Not the same as the 7.7. So make sure which you are looking at

Yes I well versed in the differences between Clark Boat Co. products.

One is an '85 with 2nd gen "deep" keel, the other has had the shoe added which, btw, are no longer available anywhere tailor made.
