Re: Sailboat Exceeding Hull Speed under Engine

Design the features of the hull to go beyond having to move water out of the way, and anything is possible with wind power. Happening in San Fran Bay right now.

? Haven't heard this one before. I would say that they might go faster than some others with their same waterline length. I wouldn't say they are faster than most other monohulls.

Neither has anyone else according to Cheribini, they said one boats average speed(a paticular race) was 9.5 knots with bursts of speed of 12.5 kts.! They say that theres is the only mono hull that can do this incredible feat

my formosa with its heft and depth and ketch rig such exceeded hull speed undersail in a chubasco measuring 60kts--we were clocked at 8,4 per gps. whoo hoo. we were only under reefed mizzen and reefed jib at the time. was fun.

Google Cigarette boats and you will find plenty. One of if not the first super go fast boats, designed and built in south FL by Don Aronow who also was responsible for Magnum, Formula and Donzi. Boats of the racers, the rich and famous (George Bush), and south FL smugglers.

Am I wrong in thinking that Cigarette Boats got their name from smuggling stuff into the States from Canada way back when...
As for exceeding hull speeds... boats do it all the time... a Catalac 900 I delivered hit 18+knots under 1/3rd jib alone.. and my Hunter Cherubini 37c hit 14 knots... bare poles...

Cherubinis are very narrow for their length, relatively speaking. Absolutely gorgeous boats. The 48 highlighted on their website is slipped at the base of my dock, owned by the marina owner. A real stunner.

My Valiant exceeds it's theoretical hull speed pretty regularly, and it's not just VOG with a little help. The right wind and sail trim and she tops over the specified max pretty easily.

Not sure what the rated hull speed is for a Columbia 30 but I saw one exceed it when she was dropped from a sling into San Diego Harbor. She was really travelling when she hit the water! Phil

Re: Sailboat Exceeding Hull Speed under Engine

aronow died fro our sins(is a book)--he designed the cigarette boats for cartel and bad guys until customs wanted one then he got ass-asinated in miami by that race car driver....aronow had 5 different named companies-scarab, cigarette, donzi, i forget the other 2 names--but he was the designer of cigarette boats until he was assassinated i forget the year--randy lanier???? was killer??? was a racing car driver controlled by cartels --gotta watch your sponsors...some aint right. was same time whittingtons and john paul and johnny paul were rico'd and arrested.... 1980s sometime.

Cigarette boats are the modern descendants of rum runners.
